How to Improve the Efficiency, Capacity and Reliability of the Grid with ACCC Conductor

Delegates Learn About ACCC Conductor Advantages

Earlier this month, delegates from India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Sri Lanka learned about the numerous benefits of using ACCC conductor.

Carl Ulrich, CTC Global's Vice President of Strategic Projects, lead the participants through a discussion of ACCC technology, the history of successful deployment, and advantages of increased capacity and reduced line losses. The delegates were quite interested to learn that reduced line losses not only reduces associated emissions, it also frees up generation capacity that is otherwise wasted.

The delegates were invited to the United States by the U.S. Department of Commerce - International Trade Administration as part of the SABIT Program

CTC Global Offers Comments to the US Department of Energy's Quadrennial Energy Review Task Force

On May 10th, the U.S. Department of Energy's Quadrennial Energy Review Task Force held a panel session and public meeting in the Tom Bradley Tower Room at the Los Angeles City Hall to discuss several key topics for inclusion in the second installment of the Quadrennial Energy Review report. Dave Bryant, Director Technology at CTC Global shared key messages with task force members and others in attendance.

Dave spoke about the importance of building an efficient transmission infrastructure stating: "To ignore the importance of transmission line efficiency, is to turn our backs on one of the least expensive ways we have to reach our clean energy policies and environmental mandates." During his presentation he pointed out that it is just important to consider transmission line efficiency as it is to consider the efficiency of generators and demand side appliances.

To underscore his message, Dave shared data about a recently completed AEP project in Texas - where ACCC was selected to replace ACSR to increase line capacity - and how it could potentially save more than 250,000 megawatt hours per year via reduced line losses - while also freeing up nearly 30 megawatts of generation. He went on to explain that the reduction in line losses on the 240 circuit mile 345 kV project was the equivalent of removing nearly 34,000 cars from the road - from a CO2 emission reduction perspective.

In this particular case, the ACCC Drake size conductor AEP selected reduced line losses by 30% over the ACSR Drake size conductor it replaced. Dave used a 34% load factor as a basis for his calculations. If you have any questions, please contact us at info@ctcglobal.com

ACCC Conductor Workshop Held in Panama City

On May 5th & 6th, CTC Global's Ismael Dones, Roberto Aastrup and Carlos Fornazzari teamed up to support an ACCC conductor workshop in Panama City.

The workshop provided attendees with extensive product data, a review of economic and environmental benefits, engineering guidelines, software training, equipment selection, hardware installation training, proper stringing techniques and much more.

Local engineers and field technicians from Empresa de Transmisión Electrica, S.A. (ETESA), AES Panama, Vimac, IGC Group and others were in attendance for the two day event. The meeting was considered very timely, as Panama's government and power industry is working hard to build one of the most efficient power grids in the world. CTC Global appreciates the efforts made by all of the attendees and looks forward to supporting upcoming installations in the near future.

Free Engineering Software

CTC Global created CCP software to help system planners and engineers compare the ampacity, line losses, thermal and ice load sag, and economic aspects of nearly any conductor type and size, so the numerous advantages of the ACCC conductor can be fully realized.

The user simply selects the conductor types and sizes from drop down menus and enters the appropriate values & assumptions highlighted in the yellow boxes. The program is fully functional and uses standard industry formulas (such as IEEE 738-2006). Outputs are readily comparable to Sag10®, PLS CADD™ and other similar programs.
