How to Improve the Efficiency, Capacity and Reliability of the Grid with ACCC Conductor

CTC GLOBAL
140 km of ACCC Conductor Deployed in Costa Rica

On September 25th, the Costa Rican Institute of Electricity (Grupo ICE) energized the first ACCC installation completed in Costa Rica. Drake size ACCC conductor was used to increase the capacity of a 7.7 km 230 kV line between the Corobici and Canas substations from 300 to 650 MVA without structural modifications. The ruling span of the existing lattice structures was 300 meters.

Currently Grupo ICE is nearing completion of their second project in Costa Rica where ACCC Drake size conductor is being used to increase the capacity of a 34 km 230 kV line between the Trapiche and Leesville substations. The ruling span on this project is 500 meters. The ACCC conductor for both projects was provided by Sterlite and the hardware was provided by Burndy. Power Engineers provided design assistance and CTC Global was on site to provide installation training and support. For more information visit www.ctcglobal.com

CTC Global's Emergency Response Team Earns State Senate Recognition

CTC Global's emergency response team leaders Carlos Pena and Octaviano Luna received State Senator John M. W. Moorlach's recognition for developing CTC Global's Emergency Response Team and Preparedness Center in Orange County, California. During emergency situations such as fires, floods, earthquakes, sniper attacks and other emergency situations, the team acts as first responders to ensure the safety of CTC Global's personnel and local residents and business staff. CTC Global's facility is officially available for emergency shelter during such situations.

CTC Global is proud of its emergency response team, is very pleased to support its community and truly appreciates our State Senate's recognition.

How ACCC Conductors are improving the Electric Power Grid ...and why it matters

Wires that carry electric energy to our homes and businesses are often overworked and overloaded. As demand for electricity goes up, the wires heat up and sag. Because excessive sag can lead to power outages, the ACCC conductor developed by CTC Global Corporation in Irvine, California is being put to wide use worldwide.

"Aluminum Conductor Composite Core" ( ACCC ) uses a high-strength carbon fiber core that doesn't stretch when heated - which prevents thermal sag. Because the composite core is 70 percent lighter than a conventional steel core, it is also able to utilize nearly 30 percent more aluminum without a weight penalty. This allows utilities to replace old wire with new ACCC - without having to spend money on expensive tower or pole modifications or replacement.

The ACCC conductor's added aluminum content and composite core not only helps deliver twice the power of a conventional conductor, it also offers decreased electrical resistance. The decreased electrical resistance of the ACCC conductor reduces electrical line losses by as much as 40 percent or more. While line losses range from 3 percent to over 20 percent in some regions, reducing line losses can allow power companies to deliver more power with less fuel consumption and less emissions.

Reducing line losses also serves to free up generation capacity. This has virtually the same effect as building new generation at a fraction of the cost. As more and more consumers switch to electric vehicles and heat pumps, the added capacity and freed up generation capacity offered by the ACCC conductor couldn't come at a better time.

To date, more than 150 utilities have installed ACCC conductor at over 375 projects worldwide.

CTC Global Collaboration with NSF Research Center Continues

Supported by numerous industry members such as CTC Global, WAPA, Bonneville, TriState, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, General Cable and others, the National Science Foundation Center for Novel High Voltage High Temperature Materials & Structures continues to advance material technology for a number of high performance, highly demanding applications. The Center is a collaboration of the University of Denver, The University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign) and Michigan Tech. The industry members provide funding, mentor various areas of research and collaborate to advance science and the skill sets of the grad students and PhD candidates. The Center continues to grow and expand its activities and industry participation. CTC Global is very pleased to be part of this program especially considering that much of its focus is aimed at improving the efficiency, capacity, reliability, resiliency and security of the electric power grid. CTC Global encourages other commercial entities, grid operators and utilities to participate. For more information CLICK HERE

CTC Global Holds Annual Health and Lifestyle Expo

Earlier this month with the help of several health care entities, LA Fitness and CTC Global's insurance providers, CTC Global held its annual health and lifestyle expo. The expo offered free flu shots, neck and back massages and a review of health insurance options for CTC's employees and family members. Lunch was also provided along with an interesting assortment of raffle prizes. CTC Global is pleased to support its growing staff and encourages healthy living. CTC Global greatly appreciates the support of all of the event's attendees and contributors.

ACSS vs ACCC Conductor
Why Over 150 Utilities in 35 Countries Have Selected ACCC
  • High Capacity
  • Low Sag
  • High Strength
  • Fatigue Resistant
  • Corrosion Resistant
  • Excellent Self Damping
  • Easy to Install
  • Great for Long Spans
  • Very Tough & Flexible
  • Extensively Lab & Field Tested
  • Excellent for N-1 Conditions
  • Reduced Line Losses & Emissions
  • Free's-up Generation Capacity that is Otherwise Lost

The ACCC Conductor's added aluminum content (without a weight or diameter penalty) allows it to run cooler under any load condition which translates into reduced line losses. Reduced line losses can save fuel, emissions and generation capacity.

The Bottom Line:

In more than 375 cases the ACCC conductor has provided more than 150 utilities the best economic solution for their specific project needs.

Free Engineering Software

CTC Global created CCP to help system planners and engineers compare the ampacity, line losses, thermal and ice load sag, and economic aspects of nearly any conductor type and size, so the numerous advantages of the ACCC conductor can be fully realized. The user simply selects the conductor types and sizes from drop down menus and enters the appropriate values & assumptions highlighted in the yellow boxes. The program is fully functional and uses standard industry formulas (such as IEEE 738-2006). Outputs are readily comparable to Sag10®, PLS CADD™ and other similar programs CLICK HERE

CCP Software Alert!!!

Version 4.0 now available.

CCP V-4 offers many new features and an expanded database. It's totally free and allows you, as with previous versions, the ability to compare any conductor type or size. This includes sag, tension, ampacity, line losses and much more. It's a great means of selecting the most appropriate size and type of conductor for your project.
