Newly Endorsed Best Practices in CT Libraries
Library standards that represent “best practices” for libraries, library directors and staff are essential measures to inform and guide library stakeholders, supporters, and the community. Standards serve as a reference point for evaluation; support changes on policy or services and provide a framework for ongoing development.
| |
|
Public library standards established as benchmarks of conditions are necessary for effective library service in the state of Connecticut. Each benchmark should be supported by activities that contribute to the development and sustainability of the condition. Benchmarks may include but are not limited to governance, finance, facilities, staffing, resources, and services.
Minimum public library standards help promote good quality public library service in all communities; empower libraries to strengthen community relations and promote public support for quality library service; and support transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement. Standards reinforce the principle that public libraries play a critical role in providing free access to knowledge, information, and diversity of ideas to all residents of the state. An authoritative library standards document can serve as a reference for requests and justification for funding as well as planning and training.
The Best Practices in CT Public Libraries as endorsed by the CT State Library Board has, since inception, been used as an effective tool for advocacy, strategic planning, capital planning, and general library operations by libraries across the state.
Over the past year, the ACLPD Public Library Standards Committee in collaboration with the Division of Library Development assessed the current Best Practice document and incorporated appropriate suggestions, revisions, and additions into the document, and added and refined resources to supplement the content. Access the recent State Library endorsed 2024 Best Practices in CT Public Libraries.

Summertime StoryWalks® at MLSC!
We recently added new StoryWalks®
to our collection! A StoryWalk® is a fun activity that engages families in literacy while being physically active through walking or hiking. Pages from a children’s book are placed along a walkable path.
Families have fun reading aloud together and building children’s interest in reading while enjoying the physical and mental health benefits of the outdoors.

While StoryWalks® are traditionally outdoor activities, we encourage you to use these materials wherever works for your library, including indoors. Thank you to the Richmond Memorial Library for generously donating several of our new StoryWalks®!
