Social Work students travel to Sacramento

As part of his Social Policy course on community advocacy, Professor Frank McAlpin from the CSUSB School of Social Work traveled to Sacramento with two of his students, Clarisa Grano and Sumayeh Nazari, to participate in California Social Work Lobby Days - a two-day event hosted by the National Association of Social Workers California Chapter where more than 1,200 social work students and professionals learn more about the legislative process and engage in a "hands-on" lobbying experience - talking directly to state legislators and/or their staff about important policy issues.

The Palm Desert Civic Academy gives an insider's view of the City and its functions through hands-on demonstrations, presentations and tours. It also gives participants the opportunity to grow in their leadership skills, analyze issues using data, connect with decision-makers and learn how they can make a difference in our community.

Faculty Spotlight

Sarah Dowman, assistant professor of Latinx/Chicanx literature in the Department of World Languages and Literatures at the CSUSB Palm Desert Campus, presented a project titled, “Flaquear no es una opción: Community Building and Activism in Puerto Rico's Underground Art and Music Scenes” at the Professors Across Borders (PAB) Workshop at the San Bernardino Campus.


Dowman’s research sheds lights on the current struggles of Puerto Ricans in the San Juan metropolitan area and the importance of cultural expression to social movements and subcultures.


The PAB program, funded by CSUSB's Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity Committee through Academic Affairs, contributes to campus internationalization by facilitating faculty engagement in international research, conference presentations and publications, grant writing and curriculum internationalization.

The CSUSB Office of Pre-College Programs is excited to announce its third installment of "Coachella Valley Goes to College" - a FREE professional development opportunity that brings together counselors, career center staff, campus and district admin and college access professionals for a day of workshops focused on resources and support services for pre-college students.

PDC Basketball Tournament

Dribble, Shoot, Score!


Students at PDC participated in an inaugural basketball tournament on campus hosted by various campus departments, including College Possible, the Student Success Studio, the Rancho Mirage Student Center and Recreation & Wellness.


The tournament aimed to create a communal space for students to enjoy themselves, engage in physical activity and foster connections with tutors, academic coaches and other collaborators.


Participants were cheered on by fellow students, faculty and staff and enjoyed free nachos, pizza, ice cream, Gatorade and water. They also received CSUSB swag and listened to great music provided by the campus radio station PAWS Radio. Winners of the tournament received a free basketball and hydro flask.

PDC Engagement Expo

PDC students had the opportunity to learn about campus services, programs, events and engagement opportunities at the PDC Engagement Expo.


Hosted by the CSUSB Office of Student Leadership & Engagement and the CSUSB Office of Community Engagement, this annual event featured various campus departments, student clubs and organizations, as well as local nonprofits. It was a great opportunity for students to interact, ask questions and build new connections and networks both within the campus community and with outside partners. Free tacos and promo item giveaways made the event extra fun!

PDC Students Tour Palm Springs International Airport

Hospitality management students had the opportunity to go behind the scenes at the Palm Springs International Airport where they were able to see what a day in the life of a TSA agent, operations director and communications specialist experience were like and how they ensure a safe and efficient passenger experience. 

PDC Communication Day

Students and faculty from the CSUSB Palm Desert Campus and College of the Desert participated in the 2nd Annual PDC Communication Day, where more than a dozen PDC communication studies alumni returned to campus to share their experience and advice with current students.


The event included a luncheon presentation by 4-time Emmy Award winner Zane Bruce who discussed sound production in movies and television and demonstrated the “Art of Foley,” a type of sound production using props and physical items to record sounds in synch with the action onscreen.


CSUSB Communication and Media Department Chair Matthew Poole welcomed participants and remarked on what a close-knit community the students and faculty at PDC enjoy.

Grad Days

Next Stop: Commencement!


CSUSB Alumni hosted Grad Days at PDC -- the one-stop-shop for all graduation gear needs.


Vendors showcased class rings, flowers, academic regalia and much more.


Grads also had the opportunity to connect with various university departments, were provided with information about applying to graduate programs and learned how to join an alumni chapter.

The Association of Latino Faculty, Staff and Students at CSUSB held the Latinx Graduate Recognition Ceremony at PDC to celebrate the Class of 2024!
