August 2022 Newsletter

Our next dance is Saturday, August 20th at Ivy Creek United Methodist Church with guest pros Lemery and Greg Rollinscott from DC!! Lemery and Greg are full-time dance instructors and are an integral part of DC's thriving social swing dance community. Lemery started off in International 10 Dance while Greg has a background in American Ballroom and Country; they eventually discovered West Coast Swing and each other. As a couple, they've been NASDE Tour Champions and currently compete in the Showcase Routine division at West Coast Swing events around the world. Individually, they have won numerous awards for improvised performances in Champion level Jack & Jill (random partner) and Strictly Swing (chosen partner) contests. We are thrilled to have this level of talent in Charlottesville! (Photo Courtesy of Jeff Fraunhoffer, 2022 Swing Dance America)

We have extended our Earlybird Registration deadline to Wednesday, August 3rd so don't delay, register today! We have also removed the vaccine requirement and masks are optional.

SKILL REQUIREMENT: Participation in these intermediate level workshops requires a solid working knowledge and the skills to dance all basic patterns (starter step, side passes, pushes, whip) with good timing, on your own and with a partner.

SCHEDULE:
1:00-1:15 pm: Check in/Warm Up
1:15-2:15 pm: Workshop #1/The Judges' Eye
  • Are you interested in entering your first WCS competition? Or perhaps you are a seasoned competitor in search of tips to stand out and shine on the competition floor. What do judges want to see? How do they make decisions? How is competitive dancing different than social dancing? Lemery and Greg will answer these questions and more as they share their perspective from over a decade of experience competing and judging. No competition experience necessary, however participants must have a solid foundation of WCS timing and basic figures (tucks, pushes, passes and whips).
2:15-2:30 pm: Break, Check In/Warm Up
2:30-3:30 pm: Workshop #2/Dancers' Choice
  • We want to hear from you! Please fill out this survey so you can vote on the topics you're most interested in. This workshop is for dancers who already have a solid foundation of WCS timing and basic figures (tucks, pushes, passes and whips).
3:30-7:00 pm: Break/Dinner on your own
7:00-8:00 pm: Pre-Dance Lesson, West Coast Swing
  • Tuck Turns & Variations: we recommend attendees have previous WCS experience with basic figures and timing.
8:00-11:00 pm: Dance
