Deadline Extended: Call for Achievement Award Nominations

The Canadian Society of Cardiac Surgeons (CSCS) Achievement Award was created in 2023 to recognize a member who has made significant contributions to the academic, research, or clinical scopes of cardiac surgery.


CSCS members are asked to nominate an individual whose/who:

  1. career has significantly aided the advancement of and support to the cardiac surgery field in Canada; 
  2. is a member of the CSCS; and
  3. contains highly respected attributes relative to this award.


Nominations must include the following documents:

  1. a letter of recommendation summarizing the candidate’s highly respected attributes relative to this award; and
  2. a brief 1–2-page biography of the nominee.


The Achievement Award recipient will receive an honorary crystal award. The award will be presented at the CSCS Annual General Meeting.


The extended deadline for submitting nominations is Saturday, June 1, 2024 (Noon EDT). Submit to the CSCS Review Committee at cscs@ccs.ca

Summer Studentship for Gender, Equity and Diversity

The CSCS is proud to support the Canadian Medical Student Summer Scholarship in Cardiac Surgery for Gender, Equity and Diversity.


WHO? Any Canadian Medical Student and Cardiac Surgery Supervisor may apply. Preference will be given to Women and Black and Indigenous students.


WHAT? Three awards $7,000 CDN each


HOW? Send your max. 2-page application, supervisor support letter, CV and cover letter to bobby.yanagawa@unityhealth.to.


WHEN? The submission deadline is Sunday, May 26, 2024.

Bigelow Cardiac Surgery Resident Research Competition

The 4th annual Bigelow Canadian Cardiac Surgical Resident Research Competition was held on April 6, 2024 at the Pan Pacific Hotel in Toronto.


The quality of the science and presentations was uniformly outstanding. The winners of the prizes were:

  • CSCS Fan Favourite Award - Grace Lee, University of Toronto
  • 1st Place Basic/Translational Abstract Award - Dr. Ali Fatehi Hassanabad, University of Calgary
  • 2nd Place Basic/Translational Abstract Award - Dr. Joel Bierer, Dalhousie University
  • 1st Place Clinical Abstract Award - Grace Lee, University of Toronto
  • 2nd Place Clinical Abstract Award - Dr. Rachel Eikelboom, McMaster University
  • Best Graphics & Multimedia Award (tied) - Grace Lee, University of Toronto and Dr. Joel Bierer, Dalhousie University
  • Most Spirited Defence Award - Dr. Amine Mazine, University of Toronto
  • Feindel Travelling Residency Award: Dr. Joel Bierer, Dalhousie University


Congratulations to all the presenters and to the award winners, and thanks to all the attendees! We will look forward to another excellent competition and event in 2025.
