Dear Farm Friends,
May on the farm should perhaps more properly be called “Mayhem”. It might be our busiest month (but still maybe not the hardest, that pleasure is probably reserved for July or August). In May, we still need to finish big early spring tasks like seeding zillions of baby plants in the greenhouse and preparing all the fields, at the same time as transplanting and seeding acres of vegetables into those fields, setting up and running all the irrigation systems, tomatoes need to be trellised, many crops still need to be covered with special fabrics to protect them from cold nights and insects, while at the same time crop harvests are beginning. And the long days and welcome rains mean weeds are going nuts. Whoa.
This is part of the rhythm of farming, entirely dictated by the natural cycles of weather, changing seasons, and the dream to produce food for our community. We are very lucky to be able to ride this wave of yearly creative energy. Thanks for supporting us so we can continue to do this. Hopefully our offerings of top-notch produce will return that support. I’ve been ruminating on the ways, in addition to our produce, that we give back, and will be talking more about that in future newsletters.
For now, let’s enjoy the madness of May!
