Supervision Tool

The Exam Committee recently approved a new tool to support RP (Qualifying) registrants in preparing for the Registration Examination. The tool consists of five reflective modules that have been designed to assist the Qualifying registrant and their clinical supervisor to:

  • Evaluate and assess the supervisory relationship to ensure it is beneficial to the RP (Qualifying).
  • Review the supervision agreement to ensure it is clear and outlines the scope, goals and responsibilities for both the clinical supervisor and RP (Qualifying).
  • Reflect on the relationship between insight, competence, and clinical experience.
  • Review and self-assess the Entry-to-Practice Competency Profile to determine what competency areas the RP (Qualifying) needs to better understand and practice.
  • Develop a learning plan that will guide the process and content of supervision leading up to the next exam attempt.

For registrants who have failed the exam and are preparing for a second or third attempt, the tool will provide a framework to review and reflect on the most recent exam attempt.

Over the coming months, the College will be making the tool available to any RP (Qualifying) who wishes to use it on a trial basis and to provide feedback on the use experience. Registrants and clinical supervisors who use the tool will be asked to complete a brief survey that will help the Exam Committee determine if any changes are needed to ensure that it is effective.

Registrants who participate in this pilot will be able to claim up to 8 hours toward the required biennial 40 hours of professional development.

Please look for further communication about the tool in the coming weeks. If you would like more information or to indicate in an interest in trialing the tool, please email info@crpo.ca.

Interrupting One’s Psychotherapy Education Program

Applicants can apply to CRPO when they have substantially completed the coursework of their psychotherapy program. CRPO’s Registration Regulation outlines that an RP (Qualifying) registrant must be actively pursuing the requirements to transfer to RP, including completing their psychotherapy program. An RP (Qualifying) registrant must make their first attempt at the Registration Exam within 24 months of their application date. To be eligible to write the Registration Exam, CRPO must have received a final transcript/credential assessment confirming an RP (Qualifying) registrant has been conferred their degree/diploma.

RP (Qualifying) registrants must report to CRPO if they are not actively pursuing the completion of the psychotherapy program that was reported on their application. For example, the following must be reported to CRPO:

  • Program deferrals
  • Taking a leave of absence from a program
  • Withdrawing from a program
  • Termination from a program

Program deferrals or a leave of absence from a program require the registrant to request permission from CRPO’s Registrar to interrupt actively pursuing the requirements to transfer to RP. A registrant will need to provide details, and possibly supporting documentation, of extenuating circumstances. The registrant may also need to request an extension to the Examination Committee for their first exam attempt deadline based on extenuating circumstances.

RP (Qualifying) registrants that have withdrawn or been terminated from their psychotherapy program risk expiry of their certificate of registration. Certificate expiry means the individual is no longer a registrant of CRPO and they cannot use the protected title “psychotherapist” hold out as a practitioner of psychotherapy,or perform the controlled act of psychotherapy. The expiration is reflected on the public register. Expired registrants can re-apply to CRPO if they meet the registration requirements at the time they re-apply.

To discuss one of these situations with CRPO, please email registration@crpo.ca

Clinical Experience from Education Programs Recognized

At its most recent meeting, the Registration Committee granted clinical experience (CE) recognition to the following programs:

  • Ontario Association of Jungian Analysts Training Program
  • Yorkville University Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology

These programs are listed on the website.

Students from these programs no longer need to submit individual confirmation forms to report clinical experience hours. Students should contact their program to request that they report the total number of practicum hours (direct client contact and clinical supervision) to CRPO.

Students from programs without clinical experience recognition, and registrants updating CE hours after graduation, will still need to submit detailed confirmation forms.

Many registrants ask whether they can include products or content created by a third party to sell on their website. Read more in our Practice Matters article.

Quality Assurance Program: 2023 Fall CBA

On April 28, 2023, 1094 registrants were notified that they were selected to participate in a peer and practice review (PPR) as part of CRPO’s Quality Assurance Program.

The first stage of the PPR is to complete the case-based assessment (CBA). The CBA is designed to be an educational tool to help registrants identify potential gaps in their knowledge, skill, and judgment and make effective use of their professional development activity hours.

The 2023 Fall CBA will be available between Friday, October 27 and Sunday, November 5, 2023. The CBA will be open 24- hours a day during this 10-day window. Registrants will have 4 hours to complete the CBA, and they must complete the CBA in one sitting. The CBA is an online, open-book assessment that is not proctored (i.e., it is not supervised or monitored). Registrants are encouraged to access whatever materials they wish to use during the assessment.

Being selected to engage in a PPR is an ordinary part of being a regulated health professional. All health regulatory colleges are required to engage their registrants in some form of practice assessment. Current registrants will be randomly selected over the course of the next 5 years. Once selected, registrants will be required to participate in a PPR by completing the first stage (the CBA) on a regular and recurring basis, approximately every five years.

Note: CRPO communicates through email to update registrants on their regulatory requirements. The College is unable to control how emails get filtered after they are sent; therefore, it is each registrant’s responsibility to ensure that emails from the College are being received.

Tips and recommendations

  1. Remember to update the “Personal information” page of your CRPO accountwhen there are changes to your email address.
  2. Use an email account that is checked frequently; not overly cluttered; and has security settings that you can control. Certain hospitals or organizations have firewalls in place that might block emails that have many recipients or are sent by an email service. This could result in missed emails from the College, and you might miss important information.
  3. Make a habit of checking “spam” and “junk” folders to ensure important communications from the College do not get filtered there.

For CRPO registrants: Please do not unsubscribe. CRPO uses email to communicate with registrants about important College updates. If you choose to unsubscribe, it is then your responsibility to regularly check our website to keep yourself informed about your College obligations. It is the responsibility of each registrant to make sure CRPO has your current contact information, updated within 30 days of a change, and ensure that the organization you work for does not block CRPO emails. CRPO may collect information about whether a recipient has read a message. CRPO may use this information for communication planning and record-keeping.
