Registration Renewal Reminder

The deadline for RP, RP (Qualifying), and RP (Inactive) registrants to complete renewal is approaching! Registration renewal for registrants in these categories is due by March 31, 2024.

The renewal form is available on the “Renewal” page of your user account. The last step in the form will be payment of the annual registration fee and you will be prompted to pay by Visa or MasterCard directly through your account. The alternative for individuals without credit cards is a prepaid credit card.

Starting April 1, 2024, registrants who have not yet renewed will be required to pay a late fee of $150 +HST.

If you don’t intend to renew and would like to resign your registration with CRPO, please go to the “Category transfer request” page in your CRPO account and submit the resignation form.

Please see the Renewal page for more information and check out our renewal FAQ. For assistance with login issues, please see the User Management System FAQ.

Townhall Meetings

CRPO is planning to hold a series of remote ‘town hall’ type meetings over the course of the coming fiscal year, starting April 2024. Our goal is to provide registrants with an opportunity to engage with College Council members and staff on a number of topics.

All of the meetings will be held remotely and recorded so that people who cannot attend when they are scheduled can watch them on the College’s YouTube channel at their convenience. The sessions will all be an hour long and will include a brief presentation by staff and Council members, responses to questions submitted before the session and – as time allows – response to questions from people attending the sessions.

We would like your input on topics that would be of interest to you. Please complete this brief survey to tell us what you would be interested in hearing about.

Practice Standards Webinar Recording

On March 5, 12:30-1:30pm, CRPO hosted a webinar sharing highlights about the revised Professional Practice Standards for RPs, which came into effect January 1. To watch the recorded webinar, please visit this link: https://youtu.be/KDFE0II9cE0

The slides from the presentation are also available, as well as a Q&A document based on questions from participants.

Practice Standard Highlight: Supervision Frequency

In each Communique for 2024, we will be highlighting one aspect of the Professional Practice Standards, which came into effect on January 1. This month focuses on how often a supervisee should meet with their clinical supervisor.

Previously, the standard suggested receiving one hour of clinical supervision for every 4.5 direct client contact hours for Qualifying registrants, and every 10 hours for RPs working toward independent practice. CRPO received feedback that these ratios are unrealistic and costly.

Clinical supervision is an important component of CRPO’s public protection mandate. The updated commentary for Standard 4.2 Practising with Clinical Supervision, is meant to be feasible for practitioners while ensuring adequate oversight. The revised commentary emphasizes the importance of shared judgment between supervisee and supervisor based on relevant factors such as the supervisee’s experience, clientele, and other supports in place. It encourages setting regular meetings in advance. It recommends that a newer practitioner such as an RP(Qualifying) registrant receive approximately one hour of clinical supervision per week while a more experienced practitioner such as an RP working toward independent practice should receive a minimum of approximately one hour every two weeks. Again, this could vary depending on the circumstances.

We hope this guidance will allow supervisors and supervisees to make arrangements that are achievable and beneficial to client care and the supervisee’s professional development.

Education Program Recognized

The Master in Psychotherapy program at the University of Guelph is the latest educational program to receive academic recognition from CRPO. This means that the program sufficiently enables students to develop the required competencies for entry-to-practice in psychotherapy. Visit our website for more information about the recognition process or to review the other recognized programs.

Clinical Experience from Education Programs Recognized

At its most recent meeting, the Registration Committee granted clinical experience (CE) recognition to the Art Psychotherapy Diploma program at Canadian International Institute of Art Therapy and the Master in Psychotherapy program at the University of Guelph. These programs have been added to the website.

Students from these programs no longer need to submit individual confirmation forms to report clinical experience hours. Students should contact their program to request that they report the total number of practicum hours (direct client contact and clinical supervision) to CRPO.

Students from programs without clinical experience recognition and registrants updating CE hours after graduation will still need to submit detailed confirmation forms.
