Registrar's Message

Registration renewal has now closed, and the process got me thinking: what does it mean to be a regulated health professional in this province? Choosing to be registered with the College – which requires that you renew and pay your fees every year - makes you an active participant in the regulation of the profession and public protection. Your participation in registration renewal helps to protect the public you serve in two specific and important ways:

1.      You help ensure that everyone holding themselves out as a psychotherapist in this province is registered with the College, and that accurate and up-to-date information is available on the public register. This supports the College’s work in identifying and stopping individuals who are practising or who attempt to practise illegally.

2.      You provide the College and the government with information about psychotherapy practice and the service resources available to people in this province. Having an accurate picture of the number of RPs, their distribution across the province and the settings in which they work supports more effective planning at the system level.

With your active participation as a registrant, CRPO protects the public by ensuring:

  • anyone who wishes to be a Registered Psychotherapist meets all the entry-to-practice requirements
  • there are standards in place to ensure safe, competent and ethical care
  • RPs participate in a Quality Assurance program to support ongoing self-reflection and professional growth
  • a fair and thorough process is followed to address concerns about registrants’ conduct, competence or health
  • standards and regulations for RPs are aligned with government laws

A key benefit that Registered Psychotherapists receive from registration with CRPO – which requires annual renewal - is the privilege of using the title Registered Psychotherapist. The use of this protected title allows practitioners to identify themselves and be recognized as a regulated professional. That is why p ractising while your registration is suspended or revoked is illegal and a serious offence and why all registrants need to be mindful of your responsibilities as a regulated provider. This helps to protect the public and the reputation of the profession, as well as to ensure the public trusts Registered Psychotherapists.

These are the benefits of being registered with CRPO. On the other hand, professional associations exist to protect the interest of providers. This includes advocating for things like HST exemptions and third-party insurance coverage. These kinds of activities are not “services” that the College can or should provide.

Thank you to the 90% of registrants who renewed their registration by the deadline--meaning that their full payment was received by the College and they attested to the accuracy of the information by clicking “submit”– before the deadline. While 90% is not an unreasonable number, it means that there were 688 individuals who did not provide information required by law and / or pay fees in the amount and by the deadline. It’s interesting to note that the same system was in place for 2017 and slightly less than 5% of registrants failed to successfully complete their renewal.

Constructive feedback about the member management system was heard and will be considered by the College. This input will inform:

  • ongoing efforts to ensure that we use available technology to its best effect while still working to control the operational costs associated with receiving information and processing payments;
  • the ways in which we communicate and the frequency of messaging about renewal;
  • how we share online resources.

In turn, I encourage all registrants to ensure adequate time and funds are put aside next spring to allow for a smooth renewal process.
Association Stakeholder Meeting
As part of our ongoing commitment to staying engaged with professional associations, CRPO invites stakeholders who represent a professional association to contribute to a dialogue with the CRPO's Registrar and President at an in-person meeting in Toronto on  Thursday, June 13, 2019 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. at the CRPO office. The goal of this meeting will be to share information on the work that CRPO is doing and to discuss issues and opportunities for the profession from the regulatory perspective. Please note: due to space restrictions, only one representative from each professional association should RSVP for this event. Questions? Contact Amy Fournier at  a.fournier@crpo.ca

Don’t forget – You need to engage in learning as part of QA!
Did you know that you need to engage in 20 hours of learning activities for each year of registration? This is a professional obligation under the Quality Assurance (QA) Program. (Learn more about it here .) To let the College know that you’ve met this obligation, document these activities in the Learning Record, which is a Professional Development (PD) tool available in your QA Portal.

Did you register in 2015? If so, you’re one of 2,540 members who needs to meet these requirements:

  • Show that you’ve engaged in at least 80 hours of learning activities by your next PD deadline, which falls on November 30, 2019, by documenting these activities in the Learning Record.
  • Have completed at least one Self-Assessment and one Learning Plan. Each section of these tools must be up-to-date and marked as complete by the November 30, 2019 deadline.

Did you register in 2017? Then you are one of 1,835 members who needs to meet these requirements:

  • Show that you’ve engaged in at least 40 hours of learning activities by your next PD deadline, which falls on November 30, 2019, by documenting these activities in the Learning Record.
  • Have completed at least one Self-Assessment and one Learning Plan. Each section of these tools must be up-to-date and marked as complete by the November 30, 2019 deadline.

Planning Helps Prevent Lost, Abandoned Records
Planning for the unexpected will help you and your clients in the event that you are no longer able to practise. The Information Privacy Commissioner of Ontario has recently published a resource on contingency planning . CRPO has also updated its practice guidance regarding contingency planning. Click the header “Contingency Planning” on this page to learn more.
The Public Register: What You Need to Know
CRPO’s Public Register can be found on our website under “ Find an RP ”. The Public Register contains information about all CRPO registrants and allows anyone to confirm whether a person is registered with the College, and to learn the person’s registration status, discipline history (if any) and their employment information.
Members can be searched by:

  • First Name
  • Last Name
  • Language
  • City
  • Province or State
  • Postal or Zip Code

Each search filter used further narrows down the results. It is important to note that if you checked the box “Do not publish my language” during registration, anyone searching the Public Register using, for example, the “English” language filter, would not be able to find you because you have not published your language of practice. If you would like to change your language preference or have questions about the Public Register or your record, please e-mail info@crpo.ca .
CRPO is now on Twitter , Facebook and LinkedIn . Follow our feed for the latest on new resources, Council election updates, governance decisions and more!
The next meeting of CRPO Council will take place on June 20, 9:30 - 3:30 at the CRPO office. Want to attend? Be sure to register ahead of time and review the guidelines on attendance. Seating is limited and so you are asked to ensure you have a confirmation before attending!
Please do not unsubscribe. CRPO uses email to communicate with members about important College updates. If you choose to unsubscribe, it is then your responsibility to regularly check our website to keep yourself informed about your College obligations. It is the responsibility of each member to make sure CRPO has your current contact information, updated within 30 days of a change, and ensure that the organization you work for does not block CRPO emails.
