CRE STUDENT STARS!
Congratulations to our March 2024 Student Star, Emma Pollard. In her first year, she joined the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) where she conducted cellular engineering research under the guidance of Tristan Driscoll, an associate professor at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. She presented her findings at the Florida Undergraduate Research Conference and FSU Undergraduate Research Symposium in 2021. On her experience of UROP, Pollard states, “My inlet to undergraduate research at FSU was UROP. I learned about the tenets of academic research and joined a cohort of students with similar research interests as me. One of the many advantages of UROP is that it provides you with a lot of resources to get started on finding a mentor for your research, so it doesn’t feel like you’re starting from scratch. There’s a lot of moral support from your cohort members, your student leaders, and the program leaders.” Congratulations on all your accomplishments and hard work Emma!

Congratulations to our March 2024 Student Star, Anna Speer. For her Honors in the Major and IDEA grant project, she is exploring the effects of sensory deprivation floatation therapy on the creative process and making a series of small pastel drawings and large oil paintings based on her experiences. She hopes to understand how a lack of stimuli can impact how she accesses ideas for paintings, the content of her work, and the impact of restricted environmental stimulation therapy on the creative process or flow state. Speer states, “Art-making is research. Whether the research is personal, political, philosophical, or technique-based, the creation of art relies on lifelong learning and continuous research. I know my artistic career will be a constant evolution of my work, both in technique and in concept, and that is artistic research. Through my IDEA grant, I explored this intersection, which led me to explore other concepts in my work.” Congratulations on your accomplishments and hard work Anna!
