EPA Standards for PFAS in Drinking Water Finalized - What does that mean for our State & Region? | The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set new national drinking water standards to regulate six PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), also known as "forever chemicals." The Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) for these compounds are 4.0 parts per trillion (ppt) for PFOA and PFOS, and 10 ppt for GenX, PFNA, and PFHxS. These standards, which will go into effect in 2029, will impact drinking water systems in North Carolina, a state that has extensively sampled its water systems. You can find the sampling results by county at the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) website. | DEQ is supporting water systems in reducing PFAS contamination through various programs and funding. It is providing technical assistance and funding opportunities, particularly for small, rural, and underserved communities, utilizing federal funding under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund. DEQ has also launched the PFAS Treatment System Assistance Program to support North Carolina residents with PFAS contamination in private water wells. This program helps address PFAS contamination when there is no designated responsible party to provide alternative drinking water. Additionally, DEQ collaborates with the Triangle Water Supply Partnership, a coalition of drinking water utilities, and the Triangle Water Supply Monitoring Partnership (TAWSMP), which is measuring PFAS in local streams and water bodies. |
