COVID Contemplation Exhibit
PSA is excited to share artwork submitted by our members.
The art presented here was selected from submissions
by membership level, from two PSA membership levels.

Life During the Pandemic of 2020 -
What Has It Meant to You?
Events of this year will undoubtedly leave
an indelible impression on each of us.
Wouldn't it be good to have a piece of art to forever represent this time?

This was the challenge.
Choose one word to express what this season of Covid-19 has meant in your life.

Choose the word carefully and thoughtfully.
It could represent where or how you have spent this time
physically, mentally, spiritually, socially, or artistically.
Then create a pastel with that word as the   title.
Accompanying essays were encouraged.

Thanks to the many members who submitted art for this special exhibit!
Selected Signature Member Art

Unknown

22 x 15

Claudette Gamache PSA
Maine

'Stay at Home' brought me deeper into exploring - new techniques, my photos, symbols, and interest in the inner and outer world. The painting 'Unknown' came from focusing and contemplating 24/7 on a photo of students blowing bubbles. Working intuitively and intellectually, the words 'unknown' and 'invisible' became personal to me.

Unscheduled (The Days Are All the Same)

12 x 9

Jeri Greenberg PSA
North Carolina

My calendar is empty; my days have no structure. I’m feeling untethered and drifting out to sea. I went from being overbooked and physically exhausted, to being unstructured and mentally exhausted. But little by little, structure and routine came back, and things look clearer. I feel stronger.

‌

Recovery

26 x 22

Nancy Lilly PSA
Texas

Recovery takes place, most often, in a state of unconsciousness. Questions as to the ‘re-awakening’ drive outside suspense. Thoughts and lessons realized during recovery are stored silently, invisibly when the spell of sleep is broken.

At the end of recovery comes renewal, and gratitude.

Waiting

17 x 15

Nancy Ness PSA
Utah

I split my time between living in New York during the summers and Utah in the winters. During COVID isolation time, I am staying in Utah. Lately, I have been painting a series of pastels about how we feel by using body language.

Reflecting

28 x 22

Sibylla Voll PSA
California
Selected Associate Member Art

Empty

18 x 12

Anita Gladstone
New Jersey

Vulnerable

18 x 24

Gerry Hirschstein
New York

How does one feel sheltering in place and at high risk, living in a densely populated apartment-dotted neighborhood? Do they feel depressed and unable to even get out of bed, alone, and nowhere to go? Trapped? Do they feel it's hardly worth getting up in the morning?
You feel vulnerable and alone.

We need to reach out to these people and make them feel connected.

Opportunity

6 x 7.75

Tammy Kaufman
North Carolina

The COVID-19 pandemic gives me an opportunity to sit in a space of quiet reflection, to listen to nature and appreciate the beauty all around us, and to speak up for the unheard and vulnerable.

Home

12 x 10

Susan Kiss
Florida

Home was my sanctuary, where I contemplated the magnitude of how a virus could affect so many people's lives. Light streaming in gives one a sense that things will get better.

Exhausted

10 x 8

Gisela Lorens
Florida

This piece is one of nine pieces I have done this far for what I am calling my 'Blue Series.' This piece was originally called 'Tulip Blues' but was renamed 'Exhausted" as that is truly how I have been feeling.

I'm just grateful to have my art through this, even if 'blue.'

Life Lines

11 x 14

Tracey Maras
Illinois

Lifelines are what hold us all together. They are our connections with each other. They are the threads of the masks being lovingly made to protect each of us.

Unmasked

11 x 14

Paula Pearl
New Jersey

I became a nurse to care for people. That used to include sharing a smile or offering a comforting touch. Since COVID-19 that is no longer possible. My painting 'Unmasked' reflects the past, the present, and what I hope will someday be possible again.

Apprehension

10.5 x 15.25

Kathryn Reis
Pennsylvania

Lonesome

9 x 12

Catherine LaPointe Vollmer
New York
