Goal for 2020 ~ Blankets for 25,000 Children in Foster Care

Together we can do it, one blanket at a time! Current number:  3,968

My Very Own Blanket is still up and running to bring blankets of love, comfort and hope to children in foster care! Here is how you can help us do just that!

  • Order blanket kits online here. Use our "curb-side" pick up and drop off bin just outside our Blanket Workshop to safely receive and donate your blankets!

  • Drop off your quilted, crocheted and knitted blankets in the donation bin outside our workshop. We gather them up daily.

  • Not local to Central Ohio? Sponsor our "no-sew" blanket kits online to have them sent to you. We will help you get in contact with your local children's services to deliver to kids in care in your area!
COVID-19 affects Ohio foster care youth

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) — As the world continues to feel the impacts of COVID-19, a population that could be forgotten in this pandemic is children in foster care.

More than 16,000 children are currently in Ohio’s foster care system, and there are growing concerns that many may be vulnerable during this pandemic.

Needed: Face masks for caseworkers

If you are one of the many people making face masks recently, please consider dropping some off in the donation bin in front of our workshop.

We have been asked by Ohio Children's Alliance if we could sew masks for children and youth in foster care, caseworkers and supervisors, as they start to go back out on visits as well as integrate back into the world. Any size, style and color mask is welcome. Thank you for your help!
Safex hosts blanket party

Don't miss this lighthearted video of a blanket party hosted early this year by employees of Safex, health and safety consultants for businesses, at their Westerville office.

Safex employees have made blankets for us the last several years and enjoyed this year's event while making 31 blankets! Many thanks to our friends at Safex for your continued support!
Your donation can provide fleece for blanket angels
Your financial donation can keep an eager Blanket Angel supplied with fleece! Joann and her 83-year-old mother work on fleece blankets together in their shared home. Joann fringes them as her mother does not see well and has memory issues. Her mother loves tying the knots and can tie several blankets a day.

However, Joann’s budget won't stretch to buy enough fabric to keep her mother supplied. “She’s made 20 in three weeks. I spread them out so she doesn’t finish them all at once. Sometimes I untie them so she has one or two to do the next day. It's counter-productive, but it helps her to be busy and feel she’s doing something positive and useful,” Joann told us.

When you make a donation of $10 or more , your gift will sponsor blankets that Blanket Angels like Joann and her mother can make. Thank you!
Recommended viewing -- documentary about a tragic reality
Here is a recommendation from one of our Board Members, Chuck Barber, who works closely in the children’s foster care world for Northwoods Foundation , a dedicated organization partnering with My Very Own Blanket for many years.

"I work with state and county government agencies (social workers specifically). We are looking at ways our mobile applications can be deployed to staff who are providing essential services during this pandemic.

I want to encourage (with caution due to the graphic reality of the story) the viewing of The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez on Netflix. Gabriel was a beautiful and innocent 8 year boy whose life was cut short at the hands of his mother and her boyfriend.

The limited series showcases the system that many of us believe is broken at its core, putting hundreds of thousands of Gabriels at risk each and every day.”
