Dr. Jamie Shinn describes the important role churches play in communities recovering from disaster. Shinn conducted extensive research in rural communities in West Virginia after heavy flooding in 2016 temporarily displaced 2,000 residents in that state.

The NYSAF Foresters Hosts Under 40 Event 

Attention students and young professionals: The New York Society of American Foresters is hosting its first Foresters Under 40 event on the ESF campus.

ESF, Clarkson Host Free PFAS Workshop

The New York State Center of Excellence in Healthy Water Solutions at Clarkson University and ESF is hosting the free workshop Advances in PFAS: Challenges and Opportunities, which is focused on identifying priority areas, research gaps, current solutions, and steps to move forward with new collaborations.

Paul Hai to Speak at the Adirondack Wild: Friend of the Forest Preserve Meeting 

ESF Newcomb Associate Director Paul Hai will be speaking at the Adirondack Wild: Friends of the Forest Preserve annual meeting and awards ceremony Friday, Oct. 6, at the Newcomb Visitor Interpretive Center.


Hai will share progress and learnings from the first year of the Timbuctoo Climate and Career Institute involving students from the City University of New York’s Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, New York. The students spent several weeks studying climate and related ecological sciences with the goal of contemplating future careers. 


The meeting is free and open to the public. Same-day registration at the Newcomb VIC begins at 10:30 a.m.

ESF students and faculty are invited to participate in the Upper Susquehanna Watershed Forum hosted by the Upper Susquehanna Coalition (USC) and its partners.
