News and Updates from President Michelle Schutt

Hello, GCC Community,

Happy snowy Monday!

Thank you to the facilities team for keeping up with snow removal during yesterday’s storm and ensuring campus was safe for our return today.

I wanted to begin with some wonderful news: enrollment. When comparing where we were as of Jan. 7, 2023, to where we are as of yesterday, Jan. 7, 2024:

These represent INCREDIBLE gains for GCC! Thank you to all who are helping to make this happen.

In other good news, Melanie Zamojski just shared GCC's 2023 National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) report numbers for our nursing students. I am pleased to share that 90.3% of our Practical Nursing students passed their licensure exam while 97.06% of our Associate Degree Nursing students passed their licensure exam. Congratulations to the entire nursing faculty and staff!

South End Courtyard Project

Contributed by Karen Phillips, Vice President of Administration and Finance

The College is currently working with Helene Karl Architects, Inc., to finalize the design plans and the RFP that will go out to bid to demolish and rebuild the south end courtyard. Facilities is hoping that the RFP will be posted by January 2024 and bids will be due back by March 2024 with demolition starting by the end of May 2024 (these are all tentative dates).

The demolition stage will last approximately 4 to 5 months and will be extremely disruptive to staff and faculty that occupy the offices and classrooms surrounding the courtyard. We currently have a Space Planning Committee on campus that has been meeting regularly and developing procedures for future office assignments as well as working with Administration to reassign individuals and classrooms that will be impacted to alternate spaces in the main and east buildings. Some staff will be working remotely as part of the relocation planning during this period. We will continue to give regular updates on this project.

25th Martin Luther King, Jr., Day Celebration at GCC

Contributed by Judy Raper, Associate Dean of Community Engagement

GCC will be holding its 25th annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Day Celebration on campus from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Martin Luther King, Jr., Day, Jan. 15. Registration is strongly encouraged. The program will include dance, arts and crafts, education, music and free lunch. The keynote speaker is La Wanza Lett-Brewington. She is a nationally known speaker on leadership, Title IX, equity, and social justice. She was recognized by GCC during the 50th Anniversary as one 50 Distinguished Alumni. La Wanza recently joined Greenfield Community College and Berkshire Community College as their Title IX Coordinator and Affirmative Action Officer.

The title of her speech is: "Embracing Our Responsibility to the Legacy," recognizing the extraordinary actions of Dr. Martin Luther King through his words. He used his words to inspire a nation and call people to action. Join this MLK celebration to reflect and interact together.

This program is co-sponsored by the Department for Community Engagement and the Office of Student Activities and Community Service. We hope to see you there!

Latest Graduation Rate Comparison

The mid-December release of new provisional IPEDS data shows that GCC has returned to the top position among the community colleges in Massachusetts for graduation rate.

Our latest figure of 32% also puts us slightly above the national average for public, 2-year, Associate degree granting institutions.

Nominations Needed for Annual Alumni Awards

The Greenfield Community College Alumni Council confers two alumni awards each year. The Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes an alumni who has achieved substantial public recognition for their accomplishments and success. For those interested, the co-chairs of the Guided Pathways Steering Committee, Holly Fitzpatrick and Caitlin Worth, have summarized GCC's guided pathways work to date on an internal website. For the third year, you are invited to join the GCC team participating in SAAL’s Assessment workshop Feb. 5 through April 1. Professional Development opportunity from Student Affairs Assessment Leaders (SAAL) is a self-paced, open course on assessment that attracts hundreds of people every year. Useful for ALL – not only Student Affairs leaders. Enrollment grants you access to the resources forever! Click HERE for a survey and registration link letting Kim McKeage know you are joining the course. She will invite you to our GCC campus discussion group that accompanies the course. Depending on participation, we may join fellow Massachusetts community college colleagues for discussion and sharing current practices, and the course provides opportunities to engage with community college peers from around the country too. Participants typically spend 1 to 2 hours per week.
