ONE SERVICE at 10:00 a.m. this Sunday

Come for continental breakfast at 9:00 a.m., then enjoy ice cream sundaes at 9:30 a.m. to mark the last day of Sunday School. After church, come have cake in the courtyard as we celebrate our graduates' accomplishments.

This Sunday is also Graduation Sunday. Come celebrate this milestone in the lives of our high school and college graduates, supporting them in their achievements as they look forward to what's next in their life in Christ. Check out their bios in the Youth section, below.

Rector's Corner: Happy Birthday to Us!

This Sunday, we celebrate the Day of Pentecost, a significant day in the church's calendar. It's often called the church's birthday, marking the coming of the Holy Spirit and the church's empowerment to carry out Jesus' mission. This Sunday is a major feast day, and we have a lot planned to make it feel like a joyous birthday party.

Our celebration will kick off with a single service at 10:00 am. Before the service, we'll gather in the parish hall for ice cream, a sweet way to mark the end of the school and program year. During the service, we'll bless and pray for our graduating high school seniors and college students as we celebrate their hard work and prepare for their next chapters. After the service, we'll continue the festivities with cake in the courtyard to honor our graduates. It's going to be a sugar-filled, joyful day! If you speak in tongues on Sunday, we'll know why!

We will administer the sacrament of baptism during the worship service. The Day of Pentecost is one of the prescribed days of the liturgical calendar for baptism. Our worship will be a joyful, commemorative occasion as we welcome a new member into the household of God and look forward to the Holy Spirit's movement in this person's new life in Christ. In addition to baptism, we will hear the Acts reading in non-English languages, demonstrating the universal nature of God's Word that spans time and history worldwide. Many thanks to every person who will read on Sunday morning!

This Sunday will be a party, indeed! We invite everyone to worship and participate in the celebrations, even if you join us online. I can't think of a better way for our community to celebrate the church's birthday than by coming together to appreciate the different ways we are the church, feel the Holy Spirit's presence, and work together to share the Gospel with the world. Please come and celebrate with St. Matthew's on Sunday!

Peace,

Father Tim

graduates

Congratulations to Our Graduates!

These young people will be recognized this Sunday during the service:

Aidan Furman—Brookwood High School

Aidan Furman is a lover of music. This love began in elementary school when he started to play the piano. In the 5th grade, Aidan decided to learn how to play the Saxophone believing this is what he would play in middle school and high school. While Aidan has continued to play the Saxophone as part of the Brookwood Marching Band for the past 4 years, he was intrigued by the Oboe in Middle School. Aidan will be graduating from Brookwood High School and continuing his love of music at the University of Georgia, where he will continue to study the Oboe and English Horn, march the Saxophone, and maybe minor in piano. Aidan's goal is to become a music teacher. Aidan has played in Band, Full Orchestra, the GSYO Orchestra, and alongside the St. Matthew's choir from time to time.

Eva Mitchell—Brookwood High School

Eva-Sychell Mitchell will be graduating from Brookwood High School. She was born in MD and matriculated to Georgia at about six months old. She loves the Arts. She is very talented, has kept a GPA of above four points, won many awards and medals; to name a few: Presidential Awards, Academic Excellence, Arts Excellence Awards, Honor Stole and Cords and quite recently, Perfect Attendance Plaque. To God be all glory! She has Acceptance Letters for UGA, Mercer, GT, Clemson, Howard U, and lastly, but not least, UConn. Her decision is to pursue her Master's at HU within five years in the field of her choosing and talents: Architect and Design. With this monumental decision to be made, we ask for prayers from our church family. We ask for God's wisdom and divine direction in all of Eva's future undertakings as we wish her congratulations and God's discernment!!! We are very proud of Eva-Sychell.

Jacob Michael Patrick Chapman—Kennesaw State University, BA in Business Administration

I’m graduating from Kennesaw State University over the summer with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance. My future plans include marrying my beautiful fiancée in October, starting a family, and enjoying life with our newly adopted rescue dog, Chance. I'm also looking forward to landing a job (possibly in banking) and finally enjoying good health insurance again!

Jessica Delaney Hurst (Jessie) - Wesleyan College, BA in Psychology

At Wesleyan, Jessie was quite possibly the most involved student on campus. She served as Class President, and was President of Wesleyan Theatre Company, Campus Activities Board, Episcopal-Lutheran Fellowship, Reframing Club and Hyperion (Color Guard). As Executive STUNT Chair, she was responsible for reviving the most beloved Wesleyan tradition/event post-pandemic. She worked for Res Life as an ITA (tech support in the dorms), and was on the Equestrian team for a year. She was recently awarded 2024 Student of the Year.

Jessie’s passion has always been counseling/mentoring youth. She student-taught in a special-ed program at a local elementary school, and served as Youth Ministry Intern here at St Matt’s for the past 2 years. She also assisted with the youth at Christ Church in Macon until they hired a new YM.

Jessie’s plan has always been to pursue a Master’s in Counseling and to become a Christian Counselor specializing in youth and adolescents. After much prayer, and a chance encounter with a recruiter (thank you, Holy Spirit!), she is planning to follow that path to Austin, TX. She is still discerning her precise calling, but she will attend seminary - either Seminary of the Southwest for a Master’s in Mental Health or Austin Theological Seminary for a Master’s in Youth Ministry. She is very excited after visiting in April because the schools partner together so she can attend both.

Jessie will take this next year to prepare for grad school, and hopes to gain experience in the mental health field, while also working in youth ministry in some capacity.

She appreciates all the love and support from her St. Matthew’s family throughout her life, and welcomes your prayers and encouragement as she continues to discern where (and how) God is calling her to serve.
