The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission invites members of the news media to cover a “Back-to-School Pep Rally for Safety” news conference at 10 a.m., Tuesday, August 6, at Central High School in East Baton Rouge Parish.


The purpose of the event is two-fold:

  • Release of a 2024 statewide and national survey that shows a disturbing trend of school bus passing violations that endanger the safety of children
  • Reminder to all drivers in Louisiana that most students go back to school on Thursday, August 8, so school zone and school bus laws will be in effect



Speakers will include:

  • Lisa Freeman, Executive Director of the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission
  • Dr. Jason Fountain, Superintendent of Central Community Schools
  • Lt. Colonel Frank Besson, Louisiana State Police Assistant Superintendent/Chief of Staff
  • Joe Donahue, Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development
  • Michael Comeaux, Director of Safe and Healthy Schools for the Louisiana Department of Education


When: 10 a.m., Tuesday, August 6, 2024

Where: Central High School, 10200 East Brookside Drive, Baton Rouge, LA 70818


Note: Media and guests should park in the back parking lot of the school. The event will take place inside the school, in the entrance to the gymnasium.
