From the President: Sonia R. Jarboe, AIA
As Memorial Day announces the beginning of Summer, I’d like to invite you to our Chapter’s next roaming Happy Hour on June 14 from 4:30-7pm at Jackson's in Reston. We are trying to reengage with the Chapter members, network with the Board of Directors and Committee Leadership, and make new professional connections. Bring a colleague and meet some new friends!
Our largest event of the year, the 2022 Design Awards, are currently open and submittals are due today by 5pm! Submit your entries and celebrate our members’ achievements in design of the built environment and their commitment to design excellence in various practice groups. Take inventory of your recently completed projects and enter them in this year’s award program. Time is running short!
Are you considering applying for Fellowship? If so, participate in a virtual session on June 16, as Valerie Hassett, FAIA, Chair of the NoVA Fellows Committee, provides a general introduction geared towards those who have not previously attended such a session. Sign up and learn more.
And finally, we understand that everyone’s comfort level is different and would like to hear from you about which types of in-person events and interactions you would attend in the future. Tell us what types of events you want to see on the calendar by completing this one-minute questionnaire. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Upcoming Fellows Committee Events
Each year, the American Institute of Architects elevates select members to its prestigious AIA College of Fellows. Advancement is granted for major achievements in design, preservation, education, literature, and service. Fellowship honors architects who have made significant contributions to architecture and society on a national level. Architects who have been AIA members for 10 or more years are eligible for consideration.
On June 16, our chapter's Fellows Committee will be hosting an informal discussion to demystify how one becomes a Fellow. At this event we will review general questions regarding the nomination and application process, including assessing whether one is prepared, identifying the proper category, and the application timeline. We'll also offer participants an opportunity to ask their own questions. This virtual event requires preregistration, more information is available on the chapter calendar.
Current AIA Fellows are invited to attend this year's Region of the Virginias Fellows Fete, which will be held in Ballston on June 4. Watch your email for further details.

Waynewood Elementary School

Fort Hunt, VA
Photographs © Judy Davis, Architectural Photographer
An increase in enrollment and new curriculum requirements meant that the existing, international style, 1957 Waynewood Elementary School was undersized and did not meet minimum program standards or desired configurations and adjacencies.
To address capacity and programmatic inadequacies, the design team developed a series of additions and significant interior modifications. A new welcoming, limestone-clad, entry provides controlled access to the school and maintains direct physical and visual access to the exterior. A bright, double height lobby replaces the original, dimly lit space and provides access to the offices, cafeteria and new stair. The library was centrally relocated adjacent to the new outdoor learning courtyard, and the roof height was increased to create a visual connection to the classroom wings. A new performing arts wing connects the existing building to the new, 31,000 sf two-story classroom addition.

Phased, occupied construction was required, and included a complete modernization of the building systems. The new building footprint allowed for existing mature trees on site to be saved and stormwater runoff on site was reduced through pervious parking areas. The school is certified as a CHPS (Collaborative for High Performance Schools) Designed school. The building additions and modifications now allow the school to accommodate 750 students in bright and inviting 21st century learning spaces.
