Honoring Our Past
Inspiring Our Future

From the Executive Director

William Kohut

Can you believe it is already November? Many of you have accomplished many music-related activities this fall as we move full steam ahead toward the end of the semester. January will provide the perfect opportunity to attend our annual conference to refresh, renew, network with your peers, and listen to fabulous music.

I am excited to announce that we will use a new Conference App this year. The App is very interactive and will work from your mobile device. In early January, you will receive an email with directions on downloading and setting up the App and also a guide on how to navigate and use the app.

Early bird registration closed on October 15, 2023, and we are now in the pre-registration phase. This phase closes on December 23rd. Regular registration opens on December 24th and runs through January 13th. “On-The-Spot” registration opens online on January 14th and runs through January 28th.

Any participant registering for the conference through January 22nd can pick up their materials at the pre-registration tables at the hotel. Those of you who miss these deadlines still have the opportunity to complete your online registration form and either select to pay by credit card or bring a check to the“On the Spot” registration in Broadmoor Hall. When you arrive at the “On the Spot” registration desk, you must have a copy of either your registration confirmation or invoice available on your mobile device or through a printed copy. The registration worker will verify your registration and payment, and if you are paying by check onsite, they will collect your check. You will be handed your conference credentials and be on your way. It is important to note that all registrations take place through the online registration portal. We are excited to continue to offer a streamlined and faster process for conference registration.

Do not forget to book your room reservations if you are staying at the Broadmoor Hotel. The CMEA Conference Room Block fills up quickly, and you do not want to be wait-listed for a room. Use this link to connect to the online reservation system: https://book.passkey.com/event/50643162/owner/8026/home

On behalf of the CMEA Board and Staff, we look forward to seeing all of you in January 2024.

Membership Chair

Dear CMEA Membership,

As professional music educators, we enjoy a symphony of unique friendships, collegiality, and professionalism. Throughout the year it is delightful to see your posts on Facebook, Instagram, read about your activities, your photos and an occasional personal text or email. I thoroughly acknowledge and enjoy knowing about these exceptional experiences. I encourage your personal and professional creativity; involvement and wish you continued success. These unparalleled and memorable experiences will forever become our combined legacy.

Looking forward to January at the Broadmoor! Just being at the Broadmoor is exciting! It rates as one of the most exclusive and world-renowned resorts in the world. Most significantly it provides you, friends, students, and colleagues a place to refresh, revitalize, and embrace our love of music. As one of your veteran Advisory Board members, my theme of collaboration and community is perennial … go and experience. The CMEA Clinic/Conference honors and welcomes your participation. Quality and unique opportunities await at the new conference center offering profound performances, speakers, and sessions, along with exquisite dining providing a beautiful atmosphere. The legacy of CMEA is multi-faceted and comes from a historical tradition of excellence. As always, our traditional Retiree Luncheon is a prominent event held exclusively for retirees including and honoring Past-Presidents and Hall of Fame inductees.

As you navigate the CMEA/Creative Generation program, I encourage reading all the biographies of our speakers and presenters, as well as the descriptions of the events. This additional knowledge will contribute to a more definitive, memorable, and overall CMEA experience. When you notice a specialized name tag ribbon; a purple Retiree ribbon, State Assembly, Hall of Fame, Past-President, take a moment to introduce yourself. These prominent educators, our leaders paved the way, helped to build our legacy, our traditions and history with exquisite wisdom and knowledge. A wealth of information with one of our honored leaders could prove invaluable. Start with a simple hello! I promise a worthwhile and inspiring conversation - fun too!

I have loved being your CMEA Membership Chair. I will always support your work and strongly believe in our legacy, the development of CMEA and our institutional history. In unison we embrace the past, enjoy the moment and look forward to the future. As always, feel free to contact me for any concerns, interests, questions, or comments.

Thank you to all the Past-Presidents who have availed me this extraordinary opportunity.

Musically yours,

Andrea

Tri-M News

Michelle Ewer, Chair

Greetings From Tri-M,

I hope this article finds you well and ready to prepare for the Holiday Season. There is always a demand for a performing group during the holidays. A small chamber group, Carolers in the halls, a woodwind quintet in the lobby.  Do you have a Tri-M group on call?  This is a perfect opportunity to showcase Tri-M. Start putting those small ensembles together for those last-minute requests. You know they are coming!

I am often asked “Is it hard to start a Tri-M Chapter”?  The answer is 3 easy steps.

  1. Select your Chapter Advisor- Is it you or a teammate?
  2. Complete a new Chapter Membership form  Nafme.org/Tri-M
  3. Receive a certificate and a welcome packet with everything you need to get started

The website has a wealth of information for starting a chapter and ideas for service projects. Look it over.  I think you will find it beneficial. If you already have a chapter and have not renewed, please take a moment to do so. Colorado has a strong membership presence. Let’s continue the tradition.

A quote from a new chapter. “Tri-M has been a game changer.”

What can Tri-M do for your program?

January 24th is Tri-M Day at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs. Registration opens in November. The cost is $35 per student. Lunch is not included. Directors must be registered for the Conference. Erik Johnson from CSU will be presenting a clinic on Peer Assisted Learning. Sean Flanigan from Mesa State engages us with Making your Jazz Solos Sizzle.   Chris Luther at Luther Violins will share Improvisations, Rhythms, Theory and Ear Training. Javier Ulmas from UNC will give a sneak peek into a new program with Cumbia, A Building Block of Latin X Music.   Come and Dance with Kathryn Ward from Pueblo District 70. Andrew Knight from CSU will speak on Dimensions of Wellness for the Music Student.  Discover making the most of your college experience with Sarah Off from UNC.

As you can see there are many wonderful sessions to choose from. Students have the opportunity to create their own Tri-M day Mini convention.  Dr. Tim is very excited to be back in Colorado for Tri-M Day. My goal is 500 attendees. Are you planning on being part of the 2024 Tri-M experience?  I know you are going to love it.  Please watch Cmeaonline.org for registration information. Reach out if you have any questions!

Sincerely,

Michelle Ewer
