Getting to know... John Hudson!

During Vacation Bible School 2024, several members of College Lutheran Church shared their stories in interviews with our youth. For the next several weeks, we'll be highlighting a different interview in each Tuesday Update. Today's video features John Hudson!

After listening to his interview, try and answer these 3 quiz questions:

  • What was the impetus for John to start going to church and subsequently get baptized at the age of 24?
  • Name two ways John experiences God.
  • Why is the story of Elijah and the prophets Baal John's favorite Bible story?

Click the video above to hear from John Hudson!

Want to watch ALL of the videos? The playlist is accessible here.

Take Note

By Susan E. Short

Tuesday greetings! A special thank you to all that gather this past Saturday on the church porch and shared music with those finding their way to Olde Salem Days. An extra special thanks to Josh Sherman for coordinating all of the musicians. I hope you have been enjoying the return of the full choir on Sunday mornings. Please know that all ages are welcome to join us. We rehearse at 9:15 a.m. on Sunday mornings and we would welcome a few more voices. If you have questions, please let me know. I look forward to seeing and singing along with all of you during worship this Sunday!

Looking ahead:

The hymns for Sunday include:

  • Children of the Heavenly Father (LBW #474);
  • Where Charity and Love Prevail (LBW #126);
  • Just As I Am, without One Plea (LBW #296); and,
  • Lord of All Hopefulness (LBW #469).

The LBW is the Lutheran Book of Worship (Green Hymnal) and the WOV is With One Voice (Blue Hymnal).

Looking in-depth:

Our processional hymn is God Is Here! (WOV #719). The text for this hymn was written by Fred Pratt Green in 1978. He was requested to write a hymn text to be sung at the closing service of an eight-month festival on worship, music, and the arts which had been held at University United Methodist Church in Austin, Texas. According to Green, “God Is Here” helps celebrate what it means to be a church: to offer praise and prayer to God with all our varied skills and arts, to preach the Word and participate in the sacraments, to foster faith and service, and to live lives in the church and kingdom to bring glory to the Lord. The hymn emphasizes the relationship between Sunday worship and daily living. (hymnary.org)

God Is Here!

God is here! As we your people

meet to offer praise and prayer,

may we find in fuller measure

what it is in Christ we share.

Here, as in the world around us,

all our varied skills and arts

wait the coming of the Spirit

into open minds and hearts. (v.1)

A recording of this hymn can be found on YouTube at: God is Here - Hymn with Lyrics (youtube.com). I look forward to joining you for worship on Sunday as we celebrate the 18th Sunday after Pentecost. Soli Deo gloria – SES.

Youth Group Recap:

EPIC water fun!

This past Sunday, College Lutheran youth joined our friends in the Roanoke Area Lutheran Youth group for some EPIC water fun! We enjoyed some water games, food, and fellowship.

The Roanoke Area Lutheran Youth Group consists of five local Lutheran churches. College Lutheran, Christ Lutheran, St. Mark's Lutheran, St. Philip Lutheran, and Wheatland Lutheran take turns hosting various activities. We meet monthly and attend all Synod events together.

What's up next?

This coming Sunday, September 22, the CLC Youth (grades 6-12) meet at Green Hill Park for a hike and other fun at 4 PM!

Life Together on Sunday mornings is for all ages!

Come for fellowship, learning, and good eats! Our gathering includes all ages!

We start serving breakfast at 8:45 AM in the fellowship hall downstairs. By 9:05 we're in classes for Sunday School, Confirmation, and Adult Forum.

Interested in being a guest chef for breakfast? Please contact Kellie Rice.

We hope to see you as we enjoy

Life Together!

Don't Forget: Submit Your Picture for the CLC Photo Directory!

It's time for an updated photo directory of members and friends of CLC! Luckily, our existing membership record platform allows us to update and print directories as needed--we just need your photos to make it happen! CLC member Jon Osborn has graciously volunteered to coordinate this effort. Please email a JPG or TIF picture of your household members to

jonosborns@gmail.com

Some things to remember:

  • Try to have one photo with all members of your household.
  • if available, and in addition to the Family Photo, please include individual photos of household members. If individual photos are not available, the Family Photo will work just fine.
  • Avoid submitting a photo where someone is wearing sunglasses or otherwise would be difficult to see.
  • If you do not have a digital photo, we can scan physical photos in the church office.

Thanks for helping us update our directory!

The Osborns and the Shermans have sent their photos in! We hope you'll join them!

Supporting Carolina Bowen, Young Adult in Global Mission

Carolina Bowen is now serving with the Young Adults in Global Mission ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. We look forward to hearing from her as she spends this year in Cambodia!

If you would like to support Carolina's ministry, gifts can be given to College Lutheran Church with a memo line designating the gift to support Carolina Bowen. To give an online gift, visit www.elca.org/yagm/give and be sure to select "Carolina Bowen" in the dropdown menu.

CLC Card Ministry

Want to send a note to a fellow CLC member? This ministry is a great way to let others know that you are thinking about them and praying for them. Especially when someone is in the hospital, it can be difficult to send them a card. This is one way we can keep connected with one another.

How it works:

  • Bring in a card of your own or use one provided on the table next to the mailbox.
  • Place in the CLC Card Ministry Mailbox in All Saints Hall
  • Our Parish Administrator will address, provide postage, and send cards

It's that easy!

And we thank Ashley Roop for painting the mailbox!

Tuesdays at CLC: Riverstone Organic Farm

On Tuesday evenings from 4 to 6 PM, The CLC parking lot will be a drop-off point for Riverstone Organic Farm. Customers of Riverstone will be able to pick up boxes of produce that they have ordered through the farm's website. For more information about Riverstone Farm in Floyd, VA, click here.

Interested in fresh produce? Signing up ahead of time is necessary. Click here to sign up!
