Keep up to date on what's going on, and let us know if you'd like to include some news in a future update!

THIS WEEK: Join the Breakfast Club on the Third Thursday of Every Month!

Our next gathering is Thursday, April 18--THIS WEEK!

The Breakfast Club meets on the third Thursday of each month at 10:00 AM. We start with a catered breakfast (suggested donation $5) and enjoy fellowship and a program. All are welcome, so be be sure to invite friends and neighbors.

Here's what to expect in the months ahead:

  • April 18: "Know the Signs, Save a Life," by Garry Lautenschlager
  • May 16: "The History of Salem & Roanoke College," by the Salem Museum
  • June 20: "Financial Stewardship," by Thrivent Financial

Take Note

By Susan E Short

Tuesday greetings! Thank you again to Joann Barfield and the contributors to the Hugh Barfield Memorial Fund that sponsored the Roanoke Chamber Brass last Sunday. I hope you enjoyed the special music. I look forward to worshipping with you on Sunday.

Looking ahead: The hymns for Sunday include:

  • Christ the Lord Is Risen Today; Alleluia! (LBW #128);
  • The King of Love My Shepherd Is (LBW #456);
  • You Satisfy the Hungry Heart (WOV #711); and,
  • Praise the Lord, Rise Up Rejoicing (LBW #196).

The LBW is the Lutheran Book of Worship (Green Hymnal) and WOV is With One Voice (Blue Hymnal).

Looking in-depth:

Reflecting on Sunday’s appointed Psalm, Psalm 23 – A Psalm of David, the first communion hymn will be Shepherd Me, O God (ELW #780 – Evangelical Lutheran Worship hymnal) written by Marty Haugen. A prolific liturgical composer, Haugen was raised in the American Lutheran Church, received a BA in psychology from Luther College, “yet found his first position as a church musician in a Roman Catholic parish at a time when the Roman Catholic Church was undergoing profound liturgical and musical changes after Vatican II.” According to Emily Brink, hymnary.org, Haugen received a master’s degree in pastoral studies at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. In addition to Holden Evening Prayer and Now the Feast and Celebration, he has written more than 400 compositions. He is composer-in-residence at Mayflower Community Congregational Church in Minneapolis and continues to compose, travel, and teach at worship events around the world. A recording of Shepherd Me, O God by Robin Medrud, Michael Joncas, and Marty Haugen can be found on YouTube at: SHEPHERD ME, O GOD | Marty Haugen (youtube.com)

I look forward to seeing you on Sunday as we celebrate the fourth Sunday of Easter. Soli Deo gloria – SES

Wednesday Bible Study:

The Narrative Lectionary

Our long-running Wednesday Bible Study led by Pastor Drebes meets at 11:15 AM in Stoutamire Chapel. This year, we are using the Narrative Lectionary series of readings.

A lectionary is a schedule of readings, and the Narrative Lectionary is a creation of professors at Luther Seminary. Articles, podcasts, and other resources related to the readings for each week can be found on the website Working Preacher.

At CLC, our schedule of readings for Wednesdays this spring can be found here.

The Narrative Lectionary Podcast, "I Love to Tell the Story," can be found here, and on apps such Spotify, etc.

Also on Wednesdays, we celebrate a brief service of Holy Communion at 12:15 PM. We hope to see you at one or both of these midweek gatherings!

Men's Spiritual Formation Group

Please join us for fellowship and spiritual studies, meeting on Tuesdays at 7:00 PM during Lent beginning on February 20. We will meet at the home of PK Hundley, near the church. For directions and more information, please contact the church office at (540) 389-4963, or Keith Hartman at hartmankeithe@gmail.com

Sunday Mornings are for Life Together!

Come for fellowship, learning, and good eats!

We start serving breakfast at 8:45 AM in the fellowship hall downstairs. By 9:05 we're in classes for Sunday School, Confirmation, and Adult Forum.

We hope to see you as we enjoy Life Together!

The disciples committed themselves to the teaching of the apostles, the life together, the common meal, and the prayers

(Acts 2:42).

Senior High Sunday School & Adult Forum: Animate Practices!

For the next seven weeks, we'll watch a brief video presentation from seven Christian thought leaders with a message on how we practice our faith. Then, we'll break into separate discussion groups for our Senior High School Sunday School and our Adult Forum. Topics include: prayer, food, worship, sacraments, money, service, and community.

CLC Blood Drive

Our next Red Cross Blood Drive at CLC is just a month away. If you are available to donate on Saturday, May 18, between 9 am - 1 pm, please make yourself an appointment at https://www.redcrossblood.org/give.html/find-drive OR email Cynthia Bowen at 5cbsinsalem@gmail.com with your time preference. Eligibility details are available on the Red Cross website.

CLC Card Ministry

Want to send a note to a fellow CLC member? This ministry is a great way to let others know that you are thinking about them and praying for them. Especially when someone is in the hospital, it can be difficult to send them a card. This is one way we can keep connected with one another.

How it works:

  • Bring in a card of your own or use one provided on the table next to the mailbox.
  • Place in the CLC Card Ministry Mailbox in All Saints Hall
  • Our Parish Administrator will address, provide postage, and send cards

It's that easy!

And we thank Ashley Roop for painting the mailbox!
