Join the Breakfast Club on the Third Thursday of Every Month! | |
Our new monthly gathering for fellowship, learning, and breakfast got off to a great start last month when about twenty of us enjoyed a meal, conversation, games, and planning ahead. A great time was had by all, and we look forward to our future Breakfast Club events!
Our next gathering is Thursday, April 18--next week!
The Breakfast Club meets on the third Thursday of each month at 10:00 AM. We start with a catered breakfast (suggested donation $5) and enjoy fellowship and a program. All are welcome, so be be sure to invite friends and neighbors.
Here's what to expect in the months ahead:
- April 18: "Know the Signs, Save a Life," by Garry Lautenschlager
- May 16: "The History of Salem & Roanoke College," by the Salem Museum
- June 20: "Financial Stewardship," by Thrivent Financial
- And much more to come!
Want to know more? Contact Kellie Rice at kellierice@collegelutheran.org or (540) 389-4963.

Take Note
By Susan E Short
Tuesday greetings! Thank you to all of our musicians that made our Lessons and Carols service extra special. I hope you’re making plans to join us for worship on Sunday as we continue to celebrate the Easter season. As a gift from the Hugh Barfield Memorial Fund and in remembrance of Hugh’s birthday, the Roanoke Chamber Brass will join us for the service. Plan to arrive early to enjoy several selections for the Prelude.
Looking ahead:
The hymns for Sunday include:
- Lift High the Cross (LBW #177);
- This Joyful Eastertide (WOV #676);
- Have No Fear, Little Flock (LBW #476);
- Draw Us in the Spirit’s Tether (WOV #703); and,
- O God Our Help in Ages Past (LBW #320).
The LBW is the Lutheran Book of Worship (Green Hymnal) and WOV is With One Voice (Blue Hymnal).
Looking in-depth:
In addition to providing accompaniment for many of the hymns on Sunday, the Roanoke Chamber Brass has prepared special music for the Prelude, Offertory, Communion, and Postlude.
One the Prelude selections is the Sonata from Die Bankelsangerlieder (Anonymous, c. 1684, Germany). Max Derrickson, a program note writer, shared that "near the end of the late 17th century, Germany was at its own Renaissance height, and a group of unattributed vocal works called ‘Die Bankelsangerlieder’ was published. At the very end of the collection was the ‘Sonata’ scored for five brass instruments." He goes on to write that the “Renaissance term ‘bankelsanger’ referred to a travelling singer, otherwise known as a ‘troubadour’ in Renaissance France, who made his living by standing on a bench in taverns and singing for his supper. Sonata came from the Italian word ‘sonare’ which simply meant to sound or play – a precursor form to what became the fugue and later the classical sonata form we know from Mozart and Haydn.” It promises to be a remarkable piece.
A recording of this piece by a brass quartet from the Dallas Symphony Orchestra can be found at: ANONYMOUS Sonata from Die Bankelsangerlieder (youtube.com). I look forward to seeing you on Sunday as we celebrate the third Sunday of Easter. Soli Deo gloria – SES

Wednesday Bible Study:
The Narrative Lectionary
Our long-running Wednesday Bible Study led by Pastor Drebes meets at 11:15 AM in Stoutamire Chapel. This year, we are using the Narrative Lectionary series of readings.
A lectionary is a schedule of readings, and the Narrative Lectionary is a creation of professors at Luther Seminary. Articles, podcasts, and other resources related to the readings for each week can be found on the website Working Preacher.
At CLC, our schedule of readings for Wednesdays this spring can be found here.
The Narrative Lectionary Podcast, "I Love to Tell the Story," can be found here, and on apps such Spotify, etc.
Also on Wednesdays, we celebrate a brief service of Holy Communion at 12:15 PM. We hope to see you at one or both of these midweek gatherings!

CLC Card Ministry
Want to send a note to a fellow CLC member? This ministry is a great way to let others know that you are thinking about them and praying for them. Especially when someone is in the hospital, it can be difficult to send them a card. This is one way we can keep connected with one another.
How it works:
- Bring in a card of your own or use one provided on the table next to the mailbox.
- Place in the CLC Card Ministry Mailbox in All Saints Hall
- Our Parish Administrator will address, provide postage, and send cards
It's that easy!
And we thank Ashley Roop for painting the mailbox!
