AFFILIATE SPOTLIGHT: NEWTON

KANSAS HEALTH GRANTS AWARDED

On August 17, 2023, the Newton Community Foundation awarded Kansas Health grants to: Harvey County Health Department, Mirror, Inc., Newton Meals on Wheels, Inc., Peace Connections, Safe Hope, Slate Creek Elementary PTO ALL TOGETHER NOW Playground Fund and USD 373 Head Start.

Recipients shared the purpose of their grants. Newton Community Foundation Board Chair, Kathy Stucky, commented “It is truly amazing to see the creativity and goal setting ideas used by non-profits in our community”.

Additionally, a special grant was also awarded to NMC Health from the McCall Family Fund from the estates of the late Richard and Barbara McCall. The ceremony was especially meaningful due to many of the participants knowing the McCall’s over the years. The McCall’s were grounded in community efforts and provided service and leadership to many local charities, including NMC and Central Kansas Community Foundation. The legacy of the McCall’s will live on through not only this gift to the NMC but additional planned gifts supporting their church and special causes they supported over the years.

AFFILIATE SPOTLIGHT: HILLSBORO

Hillsboro Community Foundation (HCF) Partners with the Hillsboro Community Child Care Center (H4C)

The need for childcare was identified in 2019 after a discussion with the City of Hillsboro, the Hillsboro Community Foundation, and business leaders across the County. The leading concern was presented as a workforce challenge due to the lack of available childcare. This discussion prompted the formation of a Taskforce charged with analyzing data and researching initiatives to address our childcare crisis in Marion County.

The Hillsboro Community Foundation (HCF), an affiliate of Central Kansas Community Foundation, made childcare their main goal in the Fall of 2018 to help Hillsboro and Marion County with our daycare challenges. HCF distributed several grants to in-home daycare providers to assist them with supplies and various training needed to run their daycare from their homes. Only two home daycare providers contacted us for those grants to which the HCF Board had allocated five of those grants.

Since 2019, the Taskforce has grown from a group of 20 passionate community members to an official 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit governing board. The Hillsboro Community Child Care (H4C) Board represents various sectors of our community including Civic, Education, Public Health, Religious, Business, Parent Representative, local Child Care Provider, and the Hillsboro Community Foundation....

DONOR CONNECTION - AUGUST.2023

TOPICS FOR DONOR INSPIRATION

Greetings from the community foundation!

As always, it is our pleasure to work with you as you fulfill your charitable intentions. Every day, we are inspired by the generosity of our donors and fund holders. If you have not yet established your donor-advised or other type of fund at the community foundation, we look forward to working together to explore the best options for you and your family.

In this issue, we’re covering topics that surface quite frequently in our conversations with fund holders, donors, and friends in the community.

–Even philanthropy has a learning curve, both for adults and especially for children. If you are interested in teaching your children–especially your young children–about what charitable giving is all about, consider leaning into positive reinforcement. The community foundation is always happy to offer ideas and opportunities to get the whole family involved in the joy of giving.

–If you’re an entrepreneur like many of the donors and fund holders at the community foundation, you may have noticed a few parallels between how you approach charitable giving and how you approach growing your business. This is not an accident! Indeed, when it comes to philanthropy, entrepreneurs tend to “give like they made it,” treating their support of favorite causes as an investment in the community they love.

–August may be National Make-a-Will month, but really anytime of year is a good time to review your estate plan and make sure that you’ve captured your wishes for gifts to family and loved ones, as well as gifts to the charities you’ve supported throughout your lifetime. The community foundation offers tax-savvy, easy ways to help you and your advisors incorporate charitable wishes into your estate plan, including the ability to update your intentions for charitable gifts over the years to reflect current involvement in favorite causes.

Thank you for being part of the community foundation, and thank you for all you do for our region through charitable giving! We appreciate the opportunity to work together.

Wishing you all the best,

Angie Tatro, CKCF CEO
