TOM BEAN:
FROM RAILROAD TOWN TO SATELLITE CITY
| |
|
|
Forming a Foundation in 20th Century
In the early days of the 20th century, the city boomed. Within a few years, it boasted a grain company, a furniture company, a drugstore, a newspaper called the Tom Bean Bulletin, a saloon, a dance hall, a movie theater, and the Tom Bean social club.
By 1891, the city school was operating out of a two-story building with a large auditorium and several churches were built in the area.
| | | |
Importance of Its Neighbors
As time progressed, the sharp increase in automobile travel and transport, and the decline of cotton as the principal crop of the area, led businesses to the larger cities of Denison and Sherman.
Nowadays, Tom Bean's importance as an investment satellite is its proximity to Sherman, where tens of thousands of jobs are expected to come in the next 5-10 years. Where will they move if not the closest towns around?

Storing corn a key aspect of marketing plan
Farm Progress
From Bruce and Chad Wetzel’s shop yard, the view downhill into bottomland is framed by several grain bins on either side of an opening into a field of corn that’s bordered on the backside by a brilliant green stand of soybeans.
It’s a good photo op. But those grain bins offer much more than an ideal place to take a photo.
“Grain storage will make money,” Chad says. Their bins represent 300,000 bushels of storage capacity. “We have another 50,000 bushels of capacity on another farm,” he says. “I’d like to have more — enough to store wheat and corn. I think we can make money storing corn and wheat into the winter.”

5 big plans that could bring explosive growth north of Dallas
Dallas News
The developer of McKinney’s huge Craig Ranch community made headlines this week when it won approval for a sprawling $4 billion development on the Texas side of Lake Texoma.
Developer Craig International plans to build a more than 3,100-acre project on the lake’s south shore about an hour and a half north of Dallas.
It’ll include more than 7,000 residential units, including single-family homes and multifamily, along with a resort hotel, restaurant and marina.
