ROYSE CITY:
A "MAIN STREET CITY" WITH LOTS OF HISTORY
| |
|
Origin of "Royce City"'s Name |
Garrett "Byrd" Royse was born in 1838 and came to Texas after fighting in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Royse bought several tracts of land, and his family was instrumental in getting the MK&T Railroad brought from Greenville to Dallas through Rockwall County.
Family legend has it that Royse told the MK&T Railroad people that he would donate the land for a train station, only if they'd call it "Royse City."
| | | |
In 2007, Royse City was designated as an official Texas Main Street City. The Royse City Main Street program was set up to promote the city's downtown area, where the goals are to foster a thriving business district while preserving historic buildings.
Main Street is now the heart of the city and holds regular events hoping to bring people together and strengthen the community while simultaneously showing people how they arrived there.

More than 10,000 future rooftops mean big changes for small-town Royse City
Dallas News
One Sunday about four years ago, Gary Sanders went to grab doughnuts for his grandkids at a shop along Royse City’s historic Main Street.
As he was walking out the door, he spotted a run-down old convenience store that had been closed for years. There was a for-sale sign out front, and the store was right by the first light people see when they drive into the town.
