FARMERSVILLE:

REMEMBERING ONIONS & MILITARY HISTORY

Farmersville: From Trading Hub to Growth Hub

Farmersville enjoys unparalleled access to the exponential growth radiating from Collin County. As neighboring cities like Plano, Frisco, and McKinney continue to expand at a rapid pace, the ripple effect extends to surrounding areas, including Farmersville.

This strategic location positions investors to capitalize on the spillover demand for residential and commercial properties, fostering a conducive environment for substantial returns on investment.

Moreover, what sets Farmersville apart is its ability to offer competitive real estate prices reminiscent of outlying areas. Investors keen on capitalizing on the region's growth trajectory find Farmersville particularly appealing due to its comparatively lower property acquisition costs.

Onion Capital of Texas

Farmersville was true to its namesake for its first 100 years of history, being a major growing region for cotton, corn, maize, and cantaloupe.

However, onions were the mainstay of the city in the 1930s, inspiring the town to call itself the "Onion Capital of Texas" and claiming to ship more than one thousand railroad carloads of onions each year.

Farmersville still pays homage to its crop-growing past through the restoration of a 1930s onion-packing shed called "The Onion Shed", as well as farmer's markets every month.

Farmersville's quaint small-town atmosphere coupled with modern amenities and conveniences makes it an attractive prospect for families, young professionals, and retirees alike.

Investors can tap into this demand by offering a range of housing options tailored to various preferences and lifestyles, thereby diversifying their investment portfolio and mitigating risk.

Additionally, the infrastructure development and civic initiatives underway in Farmersville further bolster its appeal as an investment hotspot.

With ongoing projects aimed at enhancing connectivity, upgrading utilities, and fostering a business-friendly environment, the stage is set for sustained growth and prosperity.

HISTORIC MILITARY & JOURNALISTIC FEATS

Most Decorated WWII Soldier

Audie Murphy, the most decorated soldier of World War II, came home to a hero's welcome in Farmersville in 1945. Murphy received every U.S. Military combat award for valor available from the U.S. Army (including 3 Purple Hearts), and many military distinctions from France.

In 2021, a "Sister City Pact" was made between Farmersville and Holtzwihr, France, where Murphy had once single-handedly taken on more than 50 German soldiers. Audie Murphy Day is recognized on June 14.

First Newspaper of Collin Co.

The Farmersville Times was established in 1885, as Collin County's first official newspaper. The Times originally detailed much of the agricultural ongoings of Farmersville and the rest of the area, but would go on to become a journalistic staple of the area.

The newspaper is still in circulation today as a weekly publication and has a thriving online presence.

FARMERSVILLE IN THE NEWS

Farmersville will be Texas' next multi-gigabit city

WFAA-TV

Farmersville was once the onion capital of Texas. It was also, once, one of the most affluent cities in all of the state during the early 1920's.

It is once again making a name for itself. The city that boasts a population of 4,300 people will soon have access to fiber internet. Farmersville will be Texas' next multi-gigabit city with the help of a public-private partnership with Thrive Broadband

"That's a gamechanger for lifestyles here," said city manager Ben White.

That means high-speed fiber lines will be connected and available to all residences and businesses within the corporate limits of the city.

Successes, setbacks as city plans for future growth

Farmersville Times

2023 was a year of reflection for city leaders as Farmersville celebrated 150 years of existence through several sesquicentennial events and recognitions.

Traditional gatherings such as Old Time Saturday, Audie Murphy Day and Farmersville Lights all paid homage to the special year in the city’s history.

Jerry Shaffer, the namesake of the football stadium near Burnett Junior High School in Wylie, called it quits on his working life at 82 years old after serving his final day on the bench in December 2022. He was succeeded by Ellen Skinner, who officially took office Jan. 3. Ellen’s husband is longtime Collin County Sheriff Jim Skinner.

Farmersville's old-time charm meets forward-thinking city leaders

Dallas News

Farmersville just may be a recent version of the Mayberry of Collin County, with its red brick streets in a downtown where it’s hard to find a parking space at lunchtime and on the weekends. The old buildings — some with recent improvements, but not all — are 90% leased.

There’s a farmers and flea market every first Saturday of the month except in January and October. It’s held in the refurbished long onion shed that dates back to the 1930s when the town was known as the onion capital of Texas. There’s also an old cotton gin. And Farmersville is the hometown of the most decorated World War II soldier, Audie Murphy.
