RAILROAD TOWN NAVIGATES THE TRACKS OF TIME

Ennis: Historic City Reinvents its Own Future

From steam to stream: this town, once hitched to the tracks of yesteryear, has fast-tracked into the sleek lanes of modernity, leaving a trail of progress as its own kind of locomotion.

Throughout Ennis', railroads have been instrumental in the community's early economic boom and supplemented the city's growth for over a century.  Not only was the community strategically located in the middle of the Blackland Prairie, but it was located along the first proposed rail line from Houston to Dallas.

Ennis Bluebonnets

Ennis was designated by the 1997 State Legislature as the home of the Official Texas Bluebonnet Trail and was designated the Official Bluebonnet City of Texas.

Each April, Ennis showcases more than 40 miles of driving Bluebonnet Trails.

These trails are the oldest such trails known in the state, and tens of thousands of visitors make the short trek to Ennis to view this wonderful wildflower show.

By the mid-20th century, the significance of the railroad began to decline in the city, as the postwar boom of the mid-century favored the automobile over the locomotive. That's when Ennis had to find a way to adapt to the times.

It did so by embracing its transportation history while creating new ways of life for residents. It's done so by revitalizing its downtown and serving as a gateway to the metroplex for people traveling north into Dallas.

The growing community, only 35 miles from downtown Dallas, now offers cost-of-living savings, convenient transportation with a well-developed roadway system, less commuting time and more time for quality of life, affordable utilities, and development incentives to help you achieve your business goals.

A COMMITMENT TO HERITAGE

Official Bluebonnet City of Texas

The Bluebonnet Trails Festival, held the third weekend in April, celebrates the state flower of Texas and the vibrant bloom of wildflowers in the surrounding countryside.

First hosted in Kachina Prairie Park in 1938, the Bluebonnet Trails have since expanded into a route of several dozen miles along rural farm roads throughout the surrounding countryside east and northeast of the city

National Polka Festival

The National Polka Festival is a three-day festival that has been hosted annually since 1967 during Memorial Day weekend to commemorate the city's historic Czech Texan history and heritage.

The festival features Czech cuisine, polka music, a Memorial Day parade through downtown, and polka dances hosted at event halls operated by fraternal organizations such as Sokol or the Knights of Columbus.

Bluebonnet Trail

Each year, the bluebonnets will appear on different trails as these are natural to the area. In Ennis, the bluebonnets typically peak around the 3rd week of April, according to the Ennis Garden Club. This can vary year to year due to weather conditions and terrain.
