BOIS D'ARC LAKE, DECADES IN THE MAKING

Man-made Reservoir Brings New Opportunities

Bois d’Arc Lake is the first new major reservoir in Texas in nearly 30 years. The 16,641-acre lake is located northeast of the city of Bonham in Fannin County and began to hold water on April 14, 2021.

Bois d’Arc Lake was constructed to meet the water needs and demands of more than 2 million people. However, it's about more than providing water.

Bois D'Arc: The Name

The French name is pronounced almost like you would say "Bo Dark."

The name honors local history and recognizes the Bois d’Arc tree as a distinctive symbol with special significance for the region.

The meaning of the phrase is literally "arc of wood", after the Osage tribe that used the sturdy limbs of these trees to make their bows.

The Lake has been projected to increase economic activity in Fannin County by $682 million through construction, and an additional $166 million/year now that it's complete.

On top of that, the thousands of jobs that have brought people to the area are expected to increase the local economy by another $81 million/year

The project has also helped create 2,400 jobs and the increased activity is supporting the construction of 3,200 more jobs over the next 30 years.

Recreational activities near or on the lake include fishing, boating, nature viewing and picnic areas.

BONHAM:

WHERE COURAGE MEETS COMMUNITY

Military History

With roots dating back to the Civil War, Bonham became a strategic hub for military activities.

The city and county were named after Texas Revolution war heroes: James Bonham and James Fannin

Camp Maxey, a training center during World War II also left a mark on the city's identity.

Veteran Community

The city's commitment to service is further exemplified by the Bonham Veterans Memorial, honoring local war heroes.

The city is also home to one of the largest VA hospitals in the region, helping those who served our nation.

The town stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of patriotism and sacrifice in the heart of North Texas.

BONHAM:

Properties around the developing Bois d'Arc Lake are selling for high prices, but renters in Bonham have limited options.

Bonham, like quite a few towns near the periphery of the Dallas metro region, has a shortage of available housing.

The city launched a study in 2015 and discovered then it was about 400 units short of what the city needs, said Mark Kinnaird, community development director for the city.
