ADEC LAUNCHES EFFORT TO WEAKEN ALASKA'S OIL SPILL PREVENTION AND RESPONSE LAWS
The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation is proposing an overhaul of Alaska's oil discharge prevention and contingency plans regulations which we believe will weaken our ability to prevent and respond to catastrophic spills. ADEC Commissioner Jason Brune opened the laws to public review on October 15, stating they were too "burdensome" to industry. He is now asking Alaskans to defend the laws we developed based on lessons learned following the devastating Exxon Valdez oil spill. Regulations pertaining to Alaska's oil discharge prevention and contingency plans are working well, and doing what they were intended to do, namely, to hold industry accountable and protect our citizens, waters, shorelines and valuable economic and natural resources from oil and hazardous substance spills. CIRCAC is encouraging anyone interested in preserving the stringent industry oversight we have come to expect to tell ADEC to leave Alaska's oil spill prevention and response regulations and statutes alone. Open for business should not mean that we're open to lax ADEC regulatory oversight.

USCG Accepting Comments on proposed termination of MF NAVTEX nationwide broadcasts
The United States Coast Guard is proposing to terminate MF NAVTEX broadcasts nationwide, including those currently provided in Alaska.  NAVTEX is the primary method of disseminating Marine Safety Information (MSI) out to 270 miles and is part of the integrated Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). As these broadcasts are critical for many to receive potentially life saving weather information, the USCG is inviting public comments on the proposal until November 12, 2019.

Comments can be submitted to the USCG via the following website:

Questions regarding the proposal should be directed to:
