CHLT Hats Off for Headwaters 2021

This year's Hats Off for Headwaters will take place Sunday, October 3 - Sunday, October 10, 2021. CHLT's annual event will include a week-long online auction and educational virtual panel discussions. We will culminate the celebration with an
in-person gathering on Sunday, October 10 from 1pm - 5pm at the Headwaters Center in Winter Park. Dine on delicious cuisine by Stone Creek Catering and enjoy admission to the Headwaters River Journey Museum.

Meet CHLT Board Member: Tony Eason

1. How did you find out about CHLT?
We moved to Fraser in October 2020, and I was looking to get more involved in conservation. In researching Colorado conservation organizations, CHLT jumped out at me as the only land trust focusing solely on Grand County. And now, as my corner of the world, I wanted to “fight it.”
2. Why did you choose to work with CHLT as a board member?
In short, land is finite and in great demand. Living in CT for most of my life and being an outdoors-oriented person, it was clear that good environmental intentions and a thoughtful community isn’t enough to conserve valuable land. Direct action, community involvement, and a long-term mindset is vital in getting land protected. The geography and scale are different here in Colorado, but the same economic pressures are being applied to develop land quickly. Working with CHLT enables me to contribute to the effort to “keep the balance” between valuing land for what it is (and will be forever) and the powerful short-term development mindset. I’m not anti-development, just anti-short-term thinking development.
3. What experience do you have that is related to CHLT's mission?
I’ve been interested in nature and the environment since I can remember. And as a life-long fisher, mostly salt water, it became clear early on how land use effected water quality and every thing living in it. And that I needed to get involved. Beside volunteering in local environmental programs and efforts, I was a board member of the town nature center/preserve, I was a committee member with the Aspetuck Land Trust Land Use Committee in CT. I was also very involved as a board member with Staples Tuition Grants. While not a land trust, serving and working on the board provided valuable experience in raising awareness and increasing funding revenues in a non-profit organization.
4. What would you tell others is the single greatest benefit that CHLT provides?
It is an important mechanism for all residents, second homeowners, and visitors to Grand County in keeping forever what people value most in the county: wilderness & working lands.

The Sulphur Ranger District is looking for a District Ranger. The right person will lead a complex, challenging, and rewarding district on the wonderful ARP. The Sulphur Ranger District contains many unique areas including the Arapaho National Recreation Area (one of only two in the State of Colorado), the Winter Park Resort and multiple congressionally designated areas including four Wilderness Areas (Indian Peaks, Never Summer, Vasquez Peak, and Byers Peak), two Protection Areas (Bowen Gulch and James Peak), the James Peak Special Interest Area, and the Fraser Experimental Forest. There are large expanses of Inventoried Roadless Areas as well as numerous motorized and non-motorized trails systems. The bike trails system near Winter Park/Fraser is a regional and national draw. Although the Sulphur RD has a large recreation component, vegetation management and fuel reduction are also very active. This District is currently recovering from two large wildfires that occurred in 2020 that affected many critical resources. To express interest, please email Aaron Mayville by September 21, 2021.

Plein Air at Altitude: Painting Planet Earth

Fraser Valley Arts and the Colorado Headwaters Land Trust are hosting a Plein Air Festival Tuesday, September 7 through Sunday, September 11. Plein Air @ Altitude 2021 highlights a selection of noteworthy artists painting Colorado Headwaters Land Trust easements, Rendezvous Colorado properties, as well as showcasing Grand County natural and historical attractions. The works will be available for purchase with the proceeds benefiting the individual artists, the Colorado Headwaters Land Trust, and Fraser Valley Arts. Join the Reception and Open House at the Winter Park/Fraser Chamber of Commerce on Friday, Sept. 10. This is a great chance to meet the artists, see awards, and have the first chance to purchase artworks created during the week. Tickets are required for this event. Purchase tickets here.

On September 23, we will chat about National Public Lands Day (Sept 25), the importance of public lands, and their intersection with recreation and conservation in Grand County! Grand County’s celebration of NPLD brings together many different land-focused groups in the county, including public land agencies, land conservation groups, recreation organizations, and many others. Grand County National Public Lands Day

Recognized as one of the longest-running NPLDs in the country, Grand County's National Public Lands Day is a day full of enjoyment and dedication of our public lands. Grand County has a bounty of public lands, including a national park, national forests, wilderness areas, national recreation areas, and more. After a day of volunteering with Headwaters Trails Alliance, pack a picnic and gather in Granby at Polhamus Park from 4:30pm - 8:30pm! Enjoy music by River Wilder and The Moffat Tunnel Band. Coloring Colorado with River Jams

Join CHLT at the Headwaters Center for water and nature activities and a musical concert by Trevor Michael in honor of World Rivers Day. Christina DiMari, author of books that empower children and youth to discover hope, healing, and growth, will guide an expressive art coloring activity revolving around the beauty of nature and wildlife that can be found near our rivers. Aug 9: Fireweed (Chamerion angustifolium) blooms are a lovely sight around our mountain valleys. They thrive in forest openings, and they are living up t their name this year, which stems from fireweed's ability to colonize burned areas rapidly. They are also a reminder that fall is on its way!
