Carolyn Hackman Education Fund Scholarship

Are you a Grand County student interested in: land conservation, land management, forestry, agriculture, soil science, hydrology, ecology, wildlife biology, environmental engineering, environmental law, landscape architecture, or another related field?

Apply for the Carolyn Hackman Scholarship at Colorado Headwaters Land Trust!

Carolyn Hackman wished to provide financial assistance to Grand County students who are looking to increase their knowledge of land conservation and management, and who wish to carry such knowledge and appreciation into their adult years.

CHLT awards two $1,000 scholarships to graduating Grand County seniors, from either MPHS or WGHS, to help with their pursuit of their environmental passions. Please use your school's standard application packet (and deadlines: WGHS 3/1/2022, MPHS 3/22/2022) to apply; but also include a one-page essay detailing your interest in environmental science, land management, or a related field, and how you might apply that major or field of study to future work!

CHLT February Spotlight
Meet CHLT Board President:
Paula Stuart
1. How did you find out about Colorado Headwaters Land Trust (CHLT)?
I originally found out about CHLT by researching land trusts in Grand County when we decided to buy property in Fraser six years ago.
2. Why did you choose to work with CHLT as a board member?
We became contributors and there was a slip inserted in our receipt of donation saying that CHLT was looking for board members. I reached out to Ed Herpel on the board and we had a lengthy chat on the telephone. We decided that I would wait to go further with applying for a board position until I had moved to Fraser permanently. We moved in June, 2019 and moved into our permanent residence (a new house) in September 2019.

3. What experience do you have that is related to CHLT's mission?
My experience in the last 20 plus years began with an interest in conservation easements where I lived in Northern Vermont. I spent a year at Vermont Law School receiving a Masters in Environmental Studies (law) in August 2001. I have worked in environmental consulting, purchased property for NJ Water Supply Authority and was the first person at Upper Raritan Watershed Association in Bedminster, NJ to be the "Land specialist" pursuing and negotiating conservation easements and organizing their monitoring program according to LTA standards. In addition, I served as a volunteer on my local Bernardsville NJ Environmental Commission as a member and chair for several years reviewing development applications for adherence to environmental standards and local ordinances.

4. What would you tell others is the single greatest benefit that CHLT provides?
The single greatest benefit that CHLT provides is to preserve land that is environmentally sensitive for future generations.
