CHLT Hats Off for Headwaters 2021

This year's Hats Off for Headwaters will take place Sunday, October 3 - Sunday, October 10. CHLT's annual event will include a week-long online auction and educational virtual panel discussions. We will culminate the celebration with an
in-person gathering on Sunday, October 10 from 1pm - 5pm at the Headwaters Center in Winter Park. Enjoy delicious cuisine by Stone Creek Catering and enjoy admission to the Headwaters River Journey Museum.

Meet Terrafirma Board Member: Meghann McKenna
|
1. How/why did you get involved with land trusts?
Growing up, access to open space was always within a moment's drive. As populations grow and expand the need for nature is no less important, but the demands on that space have increased significantly. Preserving land for agriculture and habitat is critical to what many of us appreciate in our environments. Furthermore, many folks appreciate the results of open space and so education on preservation for agriculture and habitat are at the forefront.

2. What is your relationship with your local land trust(s)?
I currently serve on the board for a local land trust and when my term ends this year, I will have the privilege to transition to general volunteer capacity with less governance and more hands on volunteer time!
3. For the uninitiated, what is Terrafirma?
Terrafirma is insurance that covers legal costs related to conservation defense for land trusts. The Land Trust Alliance formed Terrafirma in 2011 to help land trusts defend their conserved lands from legal challenges. It is owned by its members to insure the costs of upholding conservation easements and fee lands held for conservation purposes when they have been violated or are under legal attack, and to provide information on risk management to those land trusts. As population and development pressures increase, so does the value of conserved properties, making them vulnerable. This national initiative demonstrates land trusts' commitment to take seriously their responsibility to ensure the permanence of their conservation work.
4. How/why did you volunteer for the Terrafirma board?
I have always felt that individuals have a responsibility to contribute back to their community. That community may be geographic or based on interests. During various phases in one’s life this may look different: it could be doing your best to raise your children or volunteering for a nonprofit organization. Between that belief and the fact that at my core I love learning—I was excited to join the Terrafirma Members committee. This committee also has a direct connection to what I do on my local land trust board and is a great opportunity to work with a variety of different people. Learning their perspectives and thought processes on various situations can help in all aspects of life.
5. What is something you'd like to accomplish while on the Terrafirma board? (or your local land trust board)?
For both Terrafirma and my local land trust I enjoy what some might say are the less exciting parts of the organizations. Creating policies and developing processes, these are what allow for the critical work of the organization to continue through all sorts of challenges.
6. What is your best argument why folks should support their local land trust?
Local land trusts work together with landowners to maintain and preserve the open spaces that we all love. We all benefit from this directly, whether through having it in our “back yard” or eating the food it creates. Without open space much of what we likely appreciate in our lives would be drastically different.

Stargazing on an Easement

CHLT will host a stargazing evening on a conservation easement outside of Fraser at the height of the Perseid Meteor Shower. Enjoy a potluck dinner followed by a dark sky discussion, stargazing, and astronomy lessons led by David Schlichting. Participants are encouraged to bring their own telescopes, although some will be available to share. SOLD OUT

Plein Air at Altitude: Painting Planet Earth

Fraser Valley Arts and the Colorado Headwaters Land Trust are hosting a Plein Air Festival Tuesday, September 7 through Sunday, September 11. Plein Air @ Altitude 2021 will highlight a selection of noteworthy artists painting Colorado Headwaters Land Trust easements, Rendezvous Colorado properties, as well as showcasing Grand County natural and historical attractions. The works will be available for purchase with the proceeds benefiting the individual artists, the Colorado Headwaters Land Trust, and Fraser Valley Arts. Join the Reception and Open House at the Winter Park/Fraser Chamber of Commerce on Friday, Sept. 10. This is a great chance to meet the artists, see awards, and have the first chance to purchase artworks created during the week. Tickets are required for this event. Purchase tickets here. |
