CHL would like to welcome the 2023 Mahurin-Crawford Cave Research Fellows– Honors College students, Katie Lane and Evie Dukes!! Pictured L to R.


Ms. Lane will be completing her Honor’s thesis research assessing access for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing at Mammoth Cave National Park. Ms. Lane hails from Nashville, Tennessee and is passionate about science interpretation, water resources, and sustainability.


Ms. Evie Dukes is from Paducah, Kentucky and is currently pursuing a triple major in Environmental Science, Chinese, and Spanish. Her interest in the natural world is evident from conducting previous biological research at Cloudbridge Nature Preserve in Costa Rica in 2022 to exploring nature via hiking, photography, and kayaking as well as raising a family of very cute ducks. Gatton Underground!


Gatton Academy high-school students, Mia West, Mykah Carden, and Gracie Veith are digging into cave and karst research with WKU faculty this spring. The team conducted a fluorescent dye tracer test to explore urban groundwater issues in the region.  


The Gatton Academy is Kentucky’s first two-year residential STEM program for gifted and talented high school students.
