Recently, Rich Mastin, Kathy Calhoun, Allene Tartaglia and I met at the Central Office to review CFA’s finances at the half-way point through the fiscal year (May 1st - April 30th). The Board of Directors approved a budget for this year that projected a loss. At this point in the year the budget anticipated a loss of $200,000. I am pleased to report that we are actually showing a profit. That is great news. This is possible due to higher income and lower expenses than expected.
We continue to invest heavily in IT. For example, we have been working to computerize possible colors in litters based on the parents. To-date, we have had to rely on staff knowledge which at times resulted in human error. Can you have a white kitten when neither parent is white? Can you have a dominant color when both parents are dilutes? Geneticist Heather Lorimar conducted another training class for our staff last week which was a follow-up to classes she held several months ago. Our staff is eager to gain knowledge and welcomed the information Heather shared.
We are also investing heavily in marketing and development. Our Marketing Committee worked hard to bring in the terrific gate at last month’s CFA International Cat Show. They have also been devoting a lot of their attention to the new Companion Cat World initiative which shows a lot of potential. Our Development Director has been toiling away to bring CFA to some Pet Expos. These events provide us with an opportunity to expose our hobby to a large audience. There is a Pet Expo in Pittsburgh this weekend (Nov. 15-17) with a large CFA presence. We are also working on opportunities to interest corporate partners in working with CFA to help support some of our programs.

CFA continues to provide financial assistance to our show-producing clubs. Check with your Regional Director to make sure you are aware of the various sponsorships we provide clubs. Every show is eligible for up to $1,000. If your show in an addition to the show schedule, you can be awarded another sponsorship. If your show is an in-conjunction show with another cat association (TICA, ACFA, WCF, etc.) there is another sponsorship that may be available. If your show has Agility CFA will cover up to $300 in reimbursement for your expenses. Clubs in Europe have assistance available to them to bring in CFA judges rather than guest judges. We want to see an increase in the number of shows and the spectators attending those shows and we are helping our clubs with some cash incentives.
We have a lot going on in an effort to make CFA viable for decades to come. We are sharing that information with you via this monthly newsletter, CFA-News notices, minutes of the Board meetings, social media postings, our bi-monthly magazine, etc.

Dues and membership notices to CFA member clubs will be emailed the beginning of December to club secretaries of record. If we do not have an email address on file for a club secretary or the email bounces back undeliverable, a hard copy notice will be sent. Many clubs have already paid the 2020 club dues, mostly in connection with licensing a 2020 show, however, all clubs will need to file a membership list to satisfy the constitutional requirement. Membership lists for the upcoming year will be accepted starting December 1, 2019 (membership lists submitted prior to December 1 do not satisfy the 2020 requirement). It’s important to note that the Central Office (CO) actually does something with the information contained on the lists submitted. We compare the addresses for the officers, particularly the Secretary and President, to the information in our database and update if necessary. This means if the membership supplied to CO has out of date information, we could possibly be changing our records to out of date information. PLEASE VERIFY that the address and email information is current and accurate before submitting a membership list to Central Office.
Annual Meeting details for the 2020 meeting in Spokane, Washington will be online early January. The dates are Thursday, June 17-Sunday, June 21, 2020.
The Central Office will be closed Thursday and Friday, November 28-29, for the Thanksgiving holiday (did you notice the turkey in the picture above?).

Geri Fellerman
Amber joined CFA’s Central Office staff in April of 2019 in the position of Special Projects Coordinator, working closely with Allene on events such as the Annual, International Show and Pet Expos. She will be working with Jo Ann Miksa-Blackwell this weekend at the upcoming Pet Expo Show in Pittsburgh and is excited to be a part of this event.
Prior to joining Central Office, Amber began work with The Feline Historical Museum after graduation from Kent State in 2013. After spending two years with the Museum, Amber left for a job in insurance, but love of the cat fancy drew her back to her current position with Central Office which offers a lot more diversity and enjoyment.
After the workday, Amber goes home to her pitty mix dog, however, Amber grew up with five rescue cats so is definitely a cat lover and hopes to have a cat or two as part of her family in the future.

In her spare time, Amber admits to being a big football fan (go Browns!) and also loves basketball. Her favorite hobby, however, is settling in with a good book.

The Care and Feeding of Judges

Continuing the topic of caring for judges, we all know they need to be fed regularly to keep them happy and working.
Food availability in the show halls can be a challenge for show committees. Some facilities allow outside food and some do not. Facilities may require clubs to hire specific food services but it may be possible to negotiate this as judges’ needs may not be met by the limited options provided. If clubs are free to provide their own concessions, then they may hire a food truck, organize a potluck, or use members to provide food service. Speaking from personal experience, the last option can have additional challenges depending on state and county laws. Food handlers’ cards and the need to obtain a temporary restaurant license may be involved.

Many judges have special diets ranging from Keto to Vegetarian. It is difficult to please everyone but having flexibility in the menu can assist keeping as many folks happy as possible. Don’t be dismayed if judges choose to skip lunch as well. They may have their own reasons for doing so that may not be related to the menu.
If clubs are allowed to provide their own beverages be sure to have plenty of water on hand. One hundred percent of polled judges wanted access to plenty of water. If there are coolers in the ring having more than one bottle is good. Plan to have the hospitality members check in regularly to see if “anyone needs anything”. This gesture is helpful and appreciated.
As with many aspects of show production communication is important. When giving judges their show fliers and possibly hotel reservation information, you can ask if they have any requests or special needs. It is far easier to plan ahead than make a special trip during the show.
Well-fed and hydrated judges will help ensure the show runs smoothly and everyone has an enjoyable weekend

As promised, this month we will share some of the specific results that came out of marketing efforts for the 2019 CFA International Show.
We are pleased to share the following results :
- Over 11,000 cat lovers (and 3 support dogs!) visited our show
- Total spectator ticket sales were $96,890
- 23.4% of gate revenue was generated by online ticket sales PRIOR to the event
- 5% of gate revenue was generated by Groupon.com
- Exhibitors came from 17 countries and 38 states
- 9 shelters participated in the CIS adopt-a-thon
- Over 125 cats were adopted at or as a result of the CIS adopt-a-thon
- There were 34,000 unique visits to to the CIS Website in the 3 months prior to the show
- 3,700 people followed discussions about the show on Facebook
- 40,000 show notices (postcards, flyers, posters, etc.) were distributed to over 500 locations in the Cleveland DMA
- 2 different TV commercials ran a total of 150 times on 3 different channels
- 14 news segments were aired on major networks within 2 days of the show
- A total of 115 radio commercial spots were aired on 7 different radio stations
- 404,202 print impressions were made in a local newspaper and in a local magazine
- FOX 8 Facebook Live Streaming on the Friday before the show generated 86,850 Impressions, 1,275 Link Clicks, 259 Reactions, 187 Comments and 247 Shares
- Over 70,000 IX Center fans received 3 different emails about our show
- In the week before the show, over 95,000 Facebook users saw a CIS ad
- Over 1 million digital impressions of 10 different ads were displayed within 1 month of show
Spectators had a wonderful time as well, judging from some of their responses. They include
"I was in cat paradise!"
"Pleeeease come back next year. I came to the Saturday event and this was the first cat show I ever attended"
"This was my first cat show. I was so excited to be there and it was everything I hoped for and more!"

We all have that special very first cat.
The one that we had as a child, or perhaps later when we had a home of our own. Or perhaps found us, and we didn't realize that we needed a cat until then.
We have also had other special "feline firsts" in our lives: our first show cat, our first cat show, our first litter (which may or may not have been planned...remembering those females who just showed up at our doorstep as well). Those of us who love cats have had so many milestones with them.
Cat Talk would like to share those stories beginning in our February issue, and Laurie Coughlan will be compiling them.

CFA is always working to improve our programs and updating where and whenever necessary. For many years it was confusing to have Ambassadors, Ambassador Cats and Pet Me Cats. Much of these three different titles were over-lapping each other and just very confusing to most of us. We thought we might give some clarification to our Ambassador Cat Program, and what is happening now.

The original
Ambassador Program was started to put people into our show halls to help answer questions about CFA and CFA Shows and what happens at a CFA cat show. And they all needed to know where the bathrooms were located because that was the question most asked by the public. If an Ambassador wanted to bring a cat to the show that was his/her personal decision and required no reporting and was not tracked nor were records kept.
The
Ambassador Cat Program had its roots in the Ambassador Program and became a separate program six years ago.
Starting this season the Ambassador Cat Program has become everything “Cats.” The includes the Ambassador Cats and the Pet Me Cats. The original Ambassador Program, as we knew it, is gone. Their people are now part of the
Mentor Program and they are now called
Show Mentors and their responsibilities have expanded into different areas. This new Mentor Program is chaired by Kathi Hoos. If you would like to be a Show Mentor please contact Kathi at

The
Ambassador Cat Program continues to grow and expand both in the numbers of active
Ambassador Cats and
Pet Me Cats and we have broadened our horizons and now produce publications that bring CFA and our cats into families and homes everywhere. We have two different coloring books, one for crayons and a second one for colored pencils, and we are in production of a third coloring/activities book which will be released next season. We have produced two years of CFA calendars and are looking to 2021 already. The book titles are "Caring for your Kitty", "The Colorful World of Pedigreed Cats" and the upcoming book is called "A Kitty for Me".

If you club has a show anytime, our coloring books are available for your spectators. Right now we are updating one of our coloring books to expand the cat color chart and information. Jacqui Bennett has been asked to help with our cat color description for the pencil coloring book. We know she will do a great job for us.

Mandatory Microchipping Law Development:
the Proposed Honolulu, HI Ordinance
Mandatory microchipping laws started as singular mandates to chip pets, but the Honolulu ordinance would add three more mandates and associated reporting requirements to the original formula. With these additional mandates come more issues for affected pet owners. While CFA supports voluntary microchipping, there are too many opportunities for failure in every aspect of the system to support the legislatively mandated use of the technology alone or with additional requirements.
The technology failures include reported health issues, failure or migration of the chip, an improper scan not revealing a microchip, universal scanners that are not really universal, and different countries require microchips of different frequencies which can be problematic along the border or in imported animals. Registering databases may not have up to date information, or the chip may not be registered at all. In the U.S., it can be something of a scavenger hunt to find registration information because of the large number of registries. There is also the misguided notion that registration of a chip is proof of ownership. By itself, the chip registration is only evidence, not proof, of ownership. Similarly, writing your name in a jacket found at the park only shows possession at some point, not ownership. The microchip system can be a valuable resource to pet owners, but it is in no means failsafe.

Although Giving Tuesday is not an official federal holiday in the United States, it has been growing in popularity since it was introduced in 2012. It is a holiday with no special rules and anyone can participate from their home or office.
The Winn Feline Foundation is an IRC section 501(c)(3) charitable organization and your donations to Winn are tax deductible. Founded in 1968, Winn is a public charity devoted to the welfare of all cats by developing or participating in projects for their betterment, including the funding of research and education. 2019 Cures4Cats Campaign is underway and will run until December 31st, 2019.
ABOUT:
Winn Feline Foundation kicked off the inaugural Cures4Cats Campaign October 21st, 2017. This annual day of awareness is dedicated to highlighting Winn-funded research, the critical need for evidence-based medicine, early-stage biomedical research, and health answers involving cats.
Each year since its inception, Cures4Cats focuses on a specific area to raise funds for feline health research, but also to bring awareness of signs and symptoms of each disease or condition for owners and bringing the veterinary community together for these efforts to help cats live longer, happier, and healthier lives.
Last year the Cures4Cats focus was chronic kidney disease (CKD) and Winn was able to reach the goal of raising $50,000. Winn then matched the funds for a total of $100,000 to go towards CKD research. With last year being only the second year, Winn was thrilled with the success.
2019 Focus:
The 2019 Cures4Cats campaign focus will be an extension of last year's campaign focus, chronic kidney disease (CKD). This year we will keep with the CKD focus, but with an emphasis in the area of feline hypertension.
Feline Hypertension is quite common in cats and can be seriously detrimental to a cat's health. It is the culprit for a variety of conditions relating to the kidneys, eyes, heart and could be indicative of other potentially fatal underlying systemic conditions. However, with timely detection due to regular monitoring and screening, most treatment plans are successful in managing hypertension.
Winn Feline Foundation wants to increase awareness of the importance of routine monitoring and management of feline hypertension. Raising funds for further research will enable an even more hopeful future for all cats.

Wonderful time as usual at the Utah Cat Fanciers show in Salt Lake City Utah. The theme this year was Utah Rex Rodeo with special prices for Rex cats. If you have not had the opportunity to attend this show you are really missing out! It is extremely easy to travel to Salt Lake City and the prices are more than reasonable. There are several really nice pet friendly hotels. Dan and I stayed at the Double Tree and it was a super experience. Please take a look at attending next year. You won’t be sorry.
Coming up on December 7 & 8 is the 48th annual Santa Claws and Kitty Paws cat show at the DoubleTree Lloyd Center in Portland, OR. This is a super popular event and usually fills a bit early. Great Raffle and location.

WOW! What a great fundraiser show the Gulf Shore Region just had on October 26 and 27 in Mesquite, Texas! The show had a great count and had exhibitors from all around the region and out of region too.
Many cats granded at the show and earned the wonderful New Grand rosettes that Crystal Wood creates. There were three New Bees at the show, which is a great sign. Many people welcomed them and helped them out.

They had a SUPER RAFFLE due to the contributions of the many GSR clubs and members of the region too. Without their support, and the exhibitors who bought raffle tickets, this raffle would not have been such a giant success. They raffle team consisted of Cheryl Dorrell, Beth Grant-Field, Carol Booth, and Eileen Cochran. The GSR made just over $2,000, which will go towards the 2021 Annual in Houston, Texas.

The costume contests each day were a huge draw for the gate and exhibitors. Every cage was filled with contestants dressed in various costumes. Every chair was full, and it was standing room only around the ring. Everyone had a great time.
On November 9th, Alamo City Cat Club held their Veterans Day cat show in Seguin, Texas. The show started with a performance from the Sequin High School ROTC unit, and everyone honored the veterans.

They had a record gate for their show in Seguin! The great gate was mostly made up of families from larger towns about an hour away! The visitors found out about the cat show from Facebook advertising. Exhibitors did a great job welcoming the visitors, including their children.Many people had a chance to pet cats, which made their day.

|
They also had a raffle which exceeded their goal of over $500. Interestingly, one-third of the tickets were purchased by the gate.
The vendors were very happy with the gate. Twelve of the GSR fundraiser T-shirts were sold to the gate as well.
It was great to see they had four New Bees at the show, and a returning New Bee from the Gulf Shore Region fundraiser show from October was there, too. Show mentors helped each New Bee at the show.

Alamo City Cat Club had a costume contest, which was a hit with the spectators and exhibitors. The children were sitting up front, on the floor, watching the contest. All the chairs were full, and it was standing room only around the ring.

The Great Lakes Region Fundraising Committee is busy producing the 2020 CATS OF CFA CATENDAR which will be available late summer. The proceeds from the sale of the Catendar and other fundraisers helps offset expenses for things such as hospitality, entertainment, etc at the CFA Annual.
GLR is having a raffle for 2 pieces of Waterford Crystal for our 2022 Annual. Tickets are $5 each and we will sell only 200 tickets. Winner announced after the sale of 200.
The 2022 CFA Annual will be held in Louisville, KY and the Great Lakes Region is looking forward to many of you joining us for this event!!

We had one show this month in Ontario, CA. This is the write up is by Lee Dowding:
The first weekend of November in 2019, Abyssinian Breeders International (ABI), an Abyssinian and Somali breed club, held their second 4 ring show – the first was in October of 2018. The members of ABI have chosen to bring to the region small, relaxed shows with new or unusual formats for exhibitors to enjoy. The show had a limit of 150 entries with 4 AB rings, and the first Breed Summit and Breed Seminar in the region, combining the Abys and Somalis into one Summit/Seminar group. 16 Abys and Somalis were entered in the show, and 3 of the judges – Darrell Newkirk, Laura McIntyre and Wendy Heidt - presided over the Summit portion of the show. Each judge evaluated all the Abys and Somalis together in one group, doing class judging as usual, and then hanging special rosettes on their top 4 Abys/Somalis. The 4th judge, Carolyn Owen, presided over the Seminar – 8 of the Abys and Somalis entered were presented for the seminar participants to compare to the standard and discuss with the judge, like a “mini-BAOS” for the Aby and Somali breeds. At the end of the show, Darrell Newkirk presented the “Best of the Best of the Summit,” special rosettes for the 4 cats ranking the highest in the Summit

Lunch was a potluck, and there was an amazing amount of food! This region really knows how to cook up a feast. The relaxed atmosphere in the show hall was inviting, and the judges were able to take their time with the cats and with their finals presentation. There were calls of “new grand!” and lots of cheering. A few new faces were among the exhibitors, and we hope they had fun and made new friends, and will join us again for the next show in Glendale, California on November 23 – the last show in Southern California in 2019.

All so we have the fabulous Phoenix Feline Fanciers show in December When everyone else is cold and wet we are warm and dry come to see "It's Feline A Lot like Christmas" and enjoy the weather!

The Indy Cat Club hosted their annual show in a new location south of Indianapolis this year. The new location may have had some influence on the variety of vendors there.

Region 6 has re-instated its Feline Nines program where exhibitors who have nine paid entries in Region 6 shows get their tenth entry paid by the region. The program continues through the end of this show season. Details and form

Upcoming shows include
Frontier Feline Fanciers in Gardner Kansas on November 23 – this year on the weekend BEFORE Thanksgiving. That is the last show in the Midwest Region until after the holidays, when in January World Wide Feline Fanciers hosts their 4-ring show in Lawrenceburg, Indiana on January 4.
Also in Region 6, but clear on the other side of the Region is another Frontier Feline Fanciers show – this time co-hosted by Topeka Cat Fanciers and Cats Kansas City. The “three Amigos” show is the same weekend as World Wide – January 4.

Show halls in the Southern Region sprung back to life in November, beginning with Cotton States' show the first weekend. Joanne Hardeman has provided us an article about the show. Capital Cat Fanciers' had an impressive gate at its show Nov. 9-10 in Gaithersburg, MD. Lots of spectators who had never been to a cat show before. We can't wait to see what the joint CFA-TICA show in Orlando, hosted by New Vision CC, brings us this weekend.
The action doesn't stop there! The first weekend of December brings the region *2* shows at opposite ends of the region, so there's no reason for anyone to remain home.

The Cotton States Cat Club welcomed 256 cats and their owners to their 81st Annual CFA Championship and Household Pet Cat Show November 2 & 3 at the Infinite Energy Center Forum in Duluth, GA. As a result of all these entries, they were able to present Top 15 awards in all four categories. The show's "Fifty Shades of Blue" theme was interpreted in each of the 8 rings in various ways with lights, sparkle, and bling. Thanks to a generous friend of the club, hundreds of stuffed blue bears throughout the show hall made their ways into ring decor and prizes.
While the beauty pageant took center stage at the show, exhibitors and spectators were able to speak with special guests, Dr. Will Draper and Dr. Fran Tyler, from The Village Vets and NatGeo Wild shows “Love & Vets” and “Animal ER Live”.
Cotton States always invites several local rescue groups to participate by bringing some of their adoptable cats and kittens. This year four rescues were represented including Furkids, Fancy Felines Rescue of the South, Cat Rangers, and Good Mews. Many of the rescue cats were entered in the household pet competition and went home with rosettes. Several adoptions were closed at the show and many applications were received. Another rescue group, Rock Cats Rescue, featuring The Amazing Acro Cats, appeared at the show and provided clicker training demonstrations.
Shoppers at the show found treasures and bargains galore with the many vendors offering cat trees and toys, T-shirts, jewelry, portraits and much, much more.
As a result of extensive Facebook advertising and FOX 5 live broadcasting from the show hall Friday morning before the show, the show entertained incredible gate…the best since 2007.

13th CFA CATSHOW IN ESTONIA, TALLINN 2-3 NOVEMBER 2019.
The theme of the show was "The biggest and the smallest breed in the world“ – MAINE COON AND TOYBOB.
AND WOW, there were so many ESTONIAN media channels interested in our event - TV3 (NEWS), Kanal2, Postimees, ETV+, Delfi, Elmar Radio ect.
So as said by one local exhibitor: "IT SEEMED LIKE THE ONE AND ONLY CAT SHOW IN ESTONIA "
I am so impressed that every year we manage to improve! Our family friendly event attracts more and more visitors! Children's corner with coloring books, surprises and activities,
shopping area and the cafeteria with hot and cold dishes are places to go to when you have seen all our gorgeous cats!
We also cooperate with 3 cat rescue organizations, they come to show with their cats and take part in HHP class. Many cats find home during the show and organisations manage to gather funds and food.
We had a lot of fun in Tallinn - met old and new friends, enjoyed beautiful cats, had great atmosphere and nice venue (Tallinn Song Festival Grounds).
Great emotions! First time in years I have so soon booked a new date for our next show- 7-8 November 2020
