CFA Junior Fanciers

Sheri Schaffer

CFA Junior Fanciers co-chair

CFA Junior Fanciers and Pennsylvania 4-H (Luzerne county ) joined together to create our program’s first co-sponsored show on July 28, 2023.

Eleven children and 12 cats participated in the event. Since this was a shared venue, the judging rings were run with a household pet format. Each cat was presented in three rings to three different judges. Two of the judges are current CFA exhibitors and breeders and the third judge was from a local cat rescue .

Junior fanciers sponsored these rings with rosettes for the finals, and old show rosettes were used as merit ribbons. All of the children exhibiting are also members of the Junior Fancier Program.

The day also included presenting project books and posters board and different cat subjects. Topics included: tabby coat patterns and colors, genetics behind the chocolate coat color, and the reasons for spaying and neutering. The presentations also included an art division which was separated into two categories: original artwork and a coloring contest with pages taken from CFA coloring books. These projects were also judged by the three judges.

Pennsylvania 4-H is governed by Penn State University, and a regional representative was there. Even though their 4-H program offers a feline program, It’s rather weak . By the end of the show, the representative was impressed on how things were run and could see this program becoming larger .

Some of the children who took part at this event are now ready to move on and try a CFA show. Finicky Feline society has graciously agreed to a Junior Fancier flat fee and so far five children are interested and three parents have agreed to steward the show .

Maui Wildfires

Michael Shelton, Region 5 Director

We've all seen the devastating footage of the fires that have been raging in Hawaii recently, particularly on Maui. It's been reported that our Maui cat fanciers are safe, but other pet owners have not been so lucky.

There is obviously a great need for help for these animals and their people. Any help is welcome, but if you'd like to donate directly at the source, the Surf Cat Ranch on Maui is a good choice. They are helping with displaced cats and dogs from the fires, homing them at the sanctuary until their people can seek them out.

You can donate from their website, www.surfcatranchmaui.com. Thanks for whatever help you all can provide.

Perry, MI Seeks to Tighten Up Restrictive Limit Law

The Perry, Michigan City Council fielded overwhelmingly negative feedback for a proposed amendment to the 2016 limit law. This largely unenforced zoning law limited residences to 2 or 4 pets (domesticated animals including cats, dogs, potbellied pigs, ducks, miniature bantam chickens, guinea hens, and rabbits), banned breeding, and required that the offspring of any accidental litters be placed within two months. The last requirement is detrimental to the puppies and kittens and contrary to the laws of many communities that prohibit placing cats and dogs younger than eight weeks. The 2016 ordinance also allows a permit to exceed the limits. The proposed amendment would change the over-limit permit to a temporary permit with a 90-day maximum period. Rescues and fosters would require a foster cat home permit, allowing the residence up to two foster cats. Like other residences, fosters would have two months to place any offspring of pregnant foster cats. No similar foster requirements for other species or plans to increase enforcement exist.

Sixty people showed up to the council meeting on August 3, 2023. Many were not even aware of the existing limit law. No one supported the proposed zoning amendments though one person suggested mandatory microchipping of all pets. According to Mayor Sue Hammond, another 25 emails were received in opposition. Ultimately, the council unanimously decided to postpone the possible adoption of the proposed ordinance for 120 days and issue a moratorium on enforcement of the current section 3.30 as it pertains to dogs and cats for 120 days.

Speaking up does make a difference. But if bad laws or recorded covenants, conditions, and restrictions on property you may purchase are already in place, advance knowledge is critical. The August 2023 issue of Cat Talk has an article provided by the CFA Legislative Group called “How to Research Pet Limit Laws” to help you determine if such restrictions exist.

CFA Breeder Assistance/Breeder Rescue Programs

Charlene Campbell

CFA Animal Welfare - CFA Breeders Assist & Breed Rescue Program VP

Hi cat fanciers, We thought we would give you glimpse into the work the CFA Breeder Assistance Program does and show you a typical month. We will only mention the breed to maintain confidentiality. Along with the examples below, we are also still working with the Ukraine Breeders and Doborkit helping them with food. Pam DelaBar also helped with Frederic Goedert’s felines in France and cats in Odessa.

Lately we have run into new breeders who are overwhelmed – not by the cats they bought and/ or bred, but by seasoned breeders “dumping” their sick and broken-down cats on them! A new breeder thinks it might be good to have a few out crosses, only to discover t-foetus, URI’s, fungus, PKD, heart murmurs, hip issues, etc.

Then, their healthy cats get sick and it is a downward spiral they cannot afford as they are new and not aware to immediately vet and isolate new cats to the cattery! We are going to work on an educational campaign for new/future exhibitors in this regard. We will also be providing articles from time to time to help folks with cattery management. We always recommend requiring a health certificate for any new cat taken into a cattery.

We are gathering information from Hawaii breeders for their recommendation for the best res- cues in Maui, Hawaii to send funds. We know the rescues will need funds. It is just heartbreaking.

CFA Regional News

Region 2

submitted by Gayle Hand

Last issue I accidentally left out a Region 2 exhibitor and her 8th BEST National Win HHP in our report. I would like to belatedly congratulate them now! Wendy Tom has been making much appreciated contributions to CFA in a number of ways. I first met her in the summer of 2022 when she hosted a Clerking School at a show in Northern California. A very busy show manager had delegated this task to Wendy and her young energy and efficiency made us feel comfortable and welcome. She provided greetings, needed supplies, and lunch! I had admired her beautiful cat earlier in the day and was pleasantly surprised at Wendy’s knowledge and care regarding feline health and genetics when we chatted. Later I learned that Wendy serves as one of our HHP Regional Representatives. Since these activities have all been in addition to successfully campaigning a cat to a National Win, I have much admiration! No slight was intended in my having failed to mention exhibitor extraordinaire Wendy Tom and her GH, HNW TOM’S SMOKEY VLAD! We are all looking forward to congratulating her along with all of our other National and Regional winners in person at our upcoming September Region 2 Banquet in Longview, WA!

Region 3

Traci Whittenberg, Regional Secretary

Lots of fun was had at the Beach Party cat show put on by the Show & Tell Cat Club and the Magnolia Fanciers in Houston, Tx. There were amazing vendors and rescue groups. Spectators who enjoyed the costume contest and, of course, the beautiful cats of Region 3.  Stay cool and enjoy the rest of your summer!

Motor City Jazz & Midwest Persian Tabby Fanciers July 22, 2023

Wendy Goldman

Motor City Jazz & Midwest Persian Tabby Fanciers had another fabulous show in Taylor, MI on July 22nd with their Christmas in July theme. This one-day show kept spectators and exhibitors busy with entertainment, prizes, gifts, refreshments, and of course, shopping. There were new vendors who we will happily see again at future shows with their homemade cat furniture. Plus, we welcomed others back with their toys and clothing.

Spectators took in the sites and voted for their favorite kitty with the Visitors Choice Award. Then, they attended an education ring hosted by Dr. Dickie, DVM. Dr. Dickie spoke on several subjects that included pain management, how to read a pet food label, cat grooming, among other interesting topics! She also had her rescue available to take applications from anyone looking to adopt their new furry best friend.

For those who desired a sweet treat, Tropical Smoothie Café was on site and handed out complimentary smoothies to spectators and exhibitors. I highly recommend the Bahama Mama!

Lastly, a Christmas in July-themed show would not be complete without a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus. The Jazzy couple was available for photo ops while they passed out gifts for all the cool cats in the crowd. All around a huge success!

Region 5

Michael Shelton, Regional Director

The Southwest Region held its regional awards show and banquet on July 29 in Simi Valley. Both the show and the banquet were decorated in our Southwestern Luau theme. We had kukui nut leis for our judges, along with orchid leis presented to our best cats. We encouraged everyone to come dressed in theme, and had a traditional roasted pig as the centerpiece of the banquet meal.

There are so many people to thank for an event like this. Pat Jacobberger put together our OTRA presentation; Julie Benzer did the awards slide show; Cyndy Byrd and Andrea Bohren decorated our banquet. Donna Fujie and Carita Inoue hand-carried anthurium for the decorations, as well as the leis, from Hawaii. Carolyn Osier did the banquet benching. Our judges helped with awards presentation, and Darrell Newkirk acted as emcee for the evening. And Rhonda Avery was everywhere, organizing both the show and the banquet. For all she did with this event, the Annual in Tucson, and so much more throughout the year, Rhonda was honored with our Spotlight Award. Thanks to everyone, and the many other people who stepped up to help and make this a successful evening.

GEMS – AKA The Global Egyptian Mau Society would once again like to congratulate the Egyptian Mau Breeders and Fanciers from around the globe who came to celebrate the annual Breed Club show in Chantilly, VA on July 29, 2023.

We had breeders and fanciers from as far as The Netherlands, and all around the U.S. (Including Hawaii!). Once again, the summit was a success with the combined breed specialty judging, the best of the best, and an education ring set up with a full agenda from breed presentations to disaster preparedness, vet seminars on current virus threats, and a stuffed animal contest.

Region 8

Yukiko Hayata, Regional Director

The 2022-3023 CFA Japan Awards Meeting and Awards Banquet were held on July 22nd at the Shinagawa Prince Hotel in Tokyo. 104 people participated. The meal was a very delicious full course, and it was a satisfying dinner with all-you-can-drink. The president of Royal Canin-Japan attended the banquet, and presented all of the best cats. The award ceremony ended smoothly and on schedule. It was a very memorable and enjoyable day.

Region 9

Pam DelaBar, Regional Director

Region 9 (Europe) has taken the summer break from shows as this is the prime vacation season. With the high temperatures being experienced throughout Europe, this has been a welcomed break.

Bird flu has been a concern this summer in many countries and a recent scientific study has confirmed cases of transmission to cats. This is a relatively rare occurrence but cat owners world wide should take all precautions to ensure their cats do not eat raw poultry or have contact with wild birds. All information has been shared with the Scientific Advisory chair. Everycat Foundation is studying reports of increased cases of FIP on the island of Cyprus. We have no cat fancy activity on Cyprus but will keep everyone informed of these investigations.
