We are nearing the end of the 2022 – 2023 show season. The last few shows of the season can be filled with both excitement and anxiety. Winning is formidable! Winning at all costs? Not so much. Winning has meaning when it is done with integrity and fair play. That being said, this can be somewhat of a bittersweet time as many cats will go onto their new careers. Some will go onto to have kittens that will leave their footprint with CFA, and some will retire to the life of leisure. I would like to think they all find that special place to live long and happy lives with people who love and cherish them.
This Year’s Annual
The election for Director-at-Large is quickly approaching. Each candidate has a statement on the CFA website available for your review. The deadline for receipt of ballots in the Central Office is June 1, 2023. A link to all clubs that have submitted a ballot is listed on the Annual Meeting page.
The Annual Meeting and awards banquet in Tucson, Arizona will be held at the JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort & Spa. The property is stunning! Pictures and a schedule of events can also be found on the Annual Meeting page. Be sure to reserve your room early using the link to secure the special rate as it is substantially less than the current rate.

2023-2024 Show Season Brings Changes
Point Requirements and Major Show Rule Changes
for the 2023-2024 Show Season
The 2023-2024 Show Rules are now available online. The Addendum to the Show Rules which provides exemptions/exceptions to the 2023-2024 Show Rules can also be found online.
Read about the list of the point requirements, and a list of other major show rule changes is available via this document.
| | |
Don't Forget the Show Flyer!
CFA Show Rule 5.04 requires a copy of the show flyer be submitted to the Central Office 90 days prior to the date of the show. If a show is licensed with less than 90 days to the date of the show, the show flyer must be included in the license application package.
At the October 2022 board meeting, the board passed a motion effective May 1, 2023 that a fee of $100 be paid to CFA if the show flyer is not submitted as required. Additionally, no further show licenses will be approved until the $100 fee is paid.
The Central Office will monitor compliance with the rule and send reminders to shows as far in advance as possible of the 90-day rule. **However, it remains the show's responsibility to submit the show flyer, regardless of the receipt of a reminder.** Keep in mind that shows licensed with less than 90 days to the date of the show must submit the show flyer with the show license.
| | |
CFA offers 5 different types of financial sponsorships for CFA licensed shows: regular, in-conjunction, agility, region 9 airfare supplement and infrequent-region judge supplement. Check out the application which has more details.

THINKING ABOUT BECOMING A CFA JUDGE?
Now is a great time to consider becoming a judge. The Board and the Judging Program Committee have approved a number of changes in the rules that make them more flexible and attainable. There is now an option for those who do not want to breed, but love to exhibit. Please thoughtfully consider the CFA Judging Program as part of your future in CFA.
Here are some of the questions we are frequently asked:
1. How long must I have been active in CFA prior to applying? For the Breeder option, 5 years of active breeding, for the Exhibitor option 7 years of active exhibiting.
2. Do I have to be a licensed clerk? YES, with Master clerk preferred. However, if you are a clerk and do not want to be a master clerk, you can test out of that requirement.
3. Do I have to belong to a club? YES, and you must be active in the club.
4. When can I apply for a Judge Mentor? When you have been breeding a minimum of 3 years or exhibiting a minimum of 5 years. Since there is a limit on the number of applicants a judge can mentor, we want to provide quality oversight, yet not tie up judges for years with one applicant.
5. What can I be doing to ensure I am on the right track while waiting to be paired with a mentor?
a. Join a CFA club and become active in show production.
b. Become known in your breed, and show excellent examples of the breed. Work on attaining the required number of Grand Champions or Grand Premiers.
c. Attend a Clerking school and become a licensed clerk.
6. Where can I get answers to my questions? The application administrator or any member of the Judging Program Committee will be happy to answer questions.
7. Do I need to attend a BAOS (Breed Awareness and Orientation School)? YES, but there is a time limit, it must be within 2 years of submission of your complete application.
More info can be found here: https://cfa.org/applying-to-the-judging-program/

Barbara Jaeger - Secretary
Every year, there are members of the CFA Judging program who truly go the "extra mile". CFA's Judges Association has developed an award to recognize those members with a special thank you. The Judges Association is now taking nominations for the 2023 Spotlight Award. Please tell why you think your nomination should receive the award.
If you know of a Judge who has performed "above and beyond" in support of CFA, the cat fancy or cats in general, this is your opportunity to nominate them for the Judges Association Spot Light Award. Any Judge with Approved or Approval pending status is eligible. The nomination should be made based upon contributions or achievements while actively judging.
The following examples are some (but by no means all) of the type of service and contributions that can be considered:
- Public speaking as an ambassador of the cat fancy (i.e.., "speaks to U of Penn feline vet school about CFA breeds")
- Serves as a mentor for new judges by accepting trainee judges at shows, serving on past judge training programs or committees, presenting at breed awareness workshops or judges workshops, development of training materials for judges.
- Serves to mentor and encourages new and existing exhibitors through activities such as participation in clerking or newbie exhibitor programs, coordination of grooming classes.
- Participates in local "grass-roots" animal welfare efforts in the community such as service to local agencies, works with local purebred rescue in breed identification, does educational programs at local schools or any activity which benefits cats or domestic animals in general."
Please submit any nominees by May 25, 2023 to Barbara Jaeger, CFA JA Secretary, Barbara.jaeger911@gmail.com or mail to 14805 S 25th Way, Phoenix, AZ 85048 and please contact me if you have ay questions.

Preparing Your Cat For a Successful Show
Wendy Heidt
Everyone loves to watch a cat enjoy themselves on the judge’s table. They command attention as they strike a pose, much like a super model on the runway.
As exhibitors and breeders, you can help your cats to achieve success.
Show rules 11.17 through 11.19 all discuss handling in the ring. Rule 11.19 d is “The decision of the judge whether or not a cat is behaving in a recalcitrant or threatening manner is final and shall not be questioned.”
Preparing your cat for this handling is important to set them up for success. No judge likes to disqualify cats for behavior.
Do you take them out of the cages the way the judges do? Observe how the judges remove the cats from the cages. Cats should face the back of the cage and relax into the judges’ hands to leave the cage backwards. Do you handle your cats at home the way the judges do? Place your hands on the sides of their heads and feel for the jawbone and along the profile. Ruffle the coat backwards. Feel from the base of the tail all the way to the tip.
Preparing them for the experience on the table and desensitizing them to the examination procedures will help them to be less stressful and more likely to show their inner beauty as they captivate the judge and the crowd

At the February, 2023 CFA Board Meeting, board members ratified a number of standard changes passed by Breed Council members. These changes are effective May 1, 2023 and will be detailed in the CFA Breed Standards.
Of note, the Lykoi were advanced to championship status; the Toybob advanced to Provisional status and the Scottish now have the Straight-Ears in two divisions (longhair and shorthair). Two new colors/patterns were recognized: Karpati for the LaPerms and Bi-metallic for the Siberians. For a brief note of the other changes....take a look at this document.

Cat Talk's Annual
Kitten Issue is Out!
Our annual "Kitten Issue" comes 65 days after our breeding issue. This year we've focused on socializing kittens (for home AND show), finding the perfect home for those kittens, a little girl who has managed to survive (and thrive) with a cleft palate, vaccines and schedules for kittens, and dealing with colibacillosis in kittens. And that's just the kitten section! We also went "Up Close and PURR-sonal" with Dee Johnson and Connie Roberts, and looked at the ins and outs of feline digestion. (and there are still MORE articles!) The Cat Talk staff worked overtime on this issue and we hope everyone enjoyed it and learned something.
We've already got the June issue in production - so DO make certain that your subscription is up to date. (remember: you'll receive a notice when your subscription is beginning to lapse).
CFA Annual Fashion Faux Paws
Every big event has underlying stories that may or may not have gone unnoticed. For example: we’re sure that attendees are already thinking about what to wear to this gala event. But what happens when the best-sewn plans of banquet attendees go awry?
- Lost a dress when that bag went missing and had to improvise?
- Come close to having a “wardrobe malfunction” just as you’re about to walk onstage?
- Forgot a very important piece of your outfit – now what?
WE WANT TO KNOW!
For the June issue of Cat Talk, we’re doing a feature on awards banquet faux-pas and we want YOUR story! (and high res photos should you happen to have one). Please send your stories to Candilee Jackson at pawdancercattery@gmail.com
And don't forget: Cat Talk makes a great gift for friends near and far - or yourself! Order and gift a subscription at https://cfa.org/cattalk-almanac/

Update on Texas Breeder Licensing Threshold Reduction Bills
In March, both houses of the Texas Legislature considered identical bills that would lower the state licensing threshold for cat and dog breeders. Initially left pending in committee, House Bill 2238 and Senate Bill 876. Both committees have now voted favorably on the bills with one minor amendment for dog conformation breeders. A floor vote is the next step.
For the committee hearings, Texans commenting on both bills found they had to navigate different processes. The Texas Senate still embraces the old, familiar method of using an email form to contact individual legislators rather than the committee. But committee members often limit emails to district constituents, thus missing out on vital feedback. People can submit written testimony in person if they cannot speak at the hearing.
Committees in the House, however, can take advantage of an app that makes it easy for constituents to comment on a bill scheduled for a public hearing. People wanting to comment must affirm state residency to use the House Public Comment portal. The 100 comments on HB 2238 were submitted to the committee and then posted on the bill web page after the hearing. This process lends itself to quick, informal statements, but savvy advocates will still include a position statement at the beginning of their comment and avoid any ambiguity. Failing to do so requires the legislative staff to interpret - or misinterpret - the commenter's position when making their tally!
The Texas House is not alone in embracing changes in the digital age. California and Washington are among those making it easier for constituents to voice their opinions to legislative committees. Some legislative bodies make it easier to contact one's legislator, but not committees where a lot of important work is done.
The duplicate bill, HB 274, was assigned to the same committee as HB 2238 but has not been scheduled for a hearing yet.

Tax Tips with George Eigenhauser
What do you do if you have already filed your federal income tax return but discover you need to make a correction? IRS Tax Tip 2023-47 can assist taxpayers who need to amend a prior tax return.
In general, you may file an amended return (usually 1040-X) within three years from the date you filed the original return or two years from when you paid the taxes owed, whichever is later. The IRS advises that an amended return should be filed if there's a change in your filing status, income, deductions, or credits. However, not all mistakes need to be corrected.
The IRS says you do not need to correct math errors or if you forgot to attach a form. Instead, the IRS will check your math while processing your return and will notify you by mail if they need any missing forms. The IRS has an interactive assistant, “Should I file an Amended Return,” at: https://www.irs.gov/help/ita/should-i-file-an-amended-return.
If you have a refund due from your most recent return the IRS recommends you wait to get it before filing an amended return to claim an additional refund. If additional taxes are due, they should be paid as soon as possible to avoid potential penalties and interest.
Don’t forget that if you made a mistake on your federal tax return you should review your state or local tax return as well.

McKenzie River Cat Club is back in Eugene, OR. The club held their show on March 18th and 19th and it was a roaring success. The entry was good and the gate was enormous! Look forward to their 2024 show
The Puget Sound/Mountain Mist Cat Clubs just finished their two day 10 ring show in Longview, WA. A few problems but all in all a really nice show. Our Regional Director, Pam Moser, stepped up to the plate to replace a judge that became ill. This caused a bit of rearranging but we got it done.
On Sunday, the club had prizes in the rings. Neil Quigley got the kittens and the prizes were Easter Eggs with money inside. Neil put the eggs in with the kittens. Even though it was late in the day, the kittens had a ball. Eggs were bouncing all over the show cages. Yeah, the show manager, me, just too tired to take a picture or two.
We do have pictures of some of the contestants in the Easter Bonnet contest.

Article contributions from Wendy Goldman and Carmen Lawrence
Mid-Ohio Cat Fanciers – April 1-2, 2023
We traveled from far and wide...family from north, south, east and mid-west made the trek in wind and rain to Mansfield, OH for the Mid-Ohio Cat Fanciers April Fools’ Day show. Things were going great! By 11:30am premiership had been judged in two rings. Household Pets had already completed a final. And both LH and SH Specialty kitten finals had already been completed in another ring. Then the lights flickered...and then POOF! It was dark. Cell phones became flashlights, and those who prepare for the worst went out to their vehicles to collect their batter powered camping lanterns. At that time, there was no ETA for when power would be restored.
| |
So we held a GLR Regional Meeting by lantern light. (above) And we sat...till 5pm. We huddled with our friends trying to stay warm as the temp continued to drop in the building. (above right) Some took naps. Some snuck back to the hotels where there was power, hoping their friends would call them with good news that the lights were back on. And our esteemed board members present, Melanie Morgan, John Colilla and Kathy Calhoun, spent the afternoon making phone calls to figure out what the plan of attack would be. And at 5pm...we left.
We enjoyed dinner with our friends while we still awaited word about the electricity. 5am Sunday rolled around, and we all received the unfortunate email...there was still no power and the ETA for restoration was Tuesday afternoon. The show unfortunately could not go on.
But we are the Great Lakes Region – and one of the things that makes us GREAT is how we pull together to make the best of any given situation. Many of us reminisce days past when there was time in the show hall to socialize with friends, and not racing around the show hall. We all got that opportunity to spend quality time together that day...even if it was, in the dark.

Just Cat-In Around Cat Fanciers - April 8-9, 2023
Here comes Peter Cottontail...Hoppin’ down the bunny...WHAT? Bunny? No no NO! That can’t be! We have cats! But on Easter weekend while most people were hoping the Easter Bunny would bring them baskets full of goodies...a group of us were in Bowling Green, OH hoping the judges would bless our kitties with full rosettes from the club! And we were Hangin’ With Our Peeps! While we were all in show mode, there was plenty of smiles, laughter and socializing in the show hall!
The CFA family was greeted in the morning with the gift of an Easter Egg with a surprise inside! Many found small cat toys, but a few fortunate people found MONEY!
| |
We were also given a paper cut out egg which was used for the Spectator’s Choice Award! (above) Spectators were given a sticker and were asked to place on the egg of the cat they liked best. It was a great way to get the spectators involved and get both spectators and exhibitors talking with each other! The judging rings were decorated with various Easter décor, including the latest stuffed animal craze SQUISHMALLOWS!
Show manager Sabrina Greiser was instrumental in coordinating box lunches to be delivered each day for those who ordered ahead and word in the show hall was they were AMAZING!
No one enjoys spending any holiday away from their family...but Just Cat-In Around made spending the Easter holiday in the show hall a blast. And despite the Easter weekend and unseasonably warm weather, the spectators came out both days for the show! It was definitely a lovely way to spend the weekend away from home!

Mike Shelton, Regional Director
Los Colores Cat Club held their traditional "Country Fair" show in Palm Springs on March 25. Besides the wonderful cats and judging lineup, the highlight of the show was a surprise celebration for longtime club member Jennifer Reding, as this show was her first domestic allbreed judging assignment!
As the show season winds down, good luck to all in achieving your goals, whatever they may be.

Candilee Jackson, Regional Secretary
Led by Show Managers Jennie Batten and Jessica Franz, Mo-Kan Cat Club hosted a one-day show on March 11th in a new and larger show hall at the City Center Fitness, in Lenexa, Kansas. Using the theme, “Spring Fling,” the show featured the very popular cat costume contest, and provided free CFA coloring books for all children in attendance. Made and donated by Jean Ingram of Summit Pet Services, a gorgeous quilt was the center piece of the show’s raffle.
It was certainly NOT April Fools Day in Waukeshau, Wisconsin, where Cats of Wisconsin (COWs) held their second “Moo-au” (luau for the uneducated!) on April 1st. This clever and fun club goes out of its way to celebrate COWs including cash drawings from the Milk Pail: Lori Alexander and Lisa Morgan each pulled a $100 bill from the bucket! Show manager, Bobbie Weirauch reported “the gate was fantastic, almost 1.5 times larger than last year … Thank you, Mike Altshul!” Among the show goings-on, there were at least four new grands, and seven new exhibitors, five of whom had purebred cats. They were given New Exhibitor badges so they could be easily identified if help was needed. Judge Annette Wilson congratulated the show’s club members for their dedicated work which resulted in “smiles and energy. The influx of spectators started right at 9am and continued throughout the day … the place was packed with folks interested in the cats, the process and the great variety of vendors.” WELL DONE, COWs!

They also produced shows in Florida for years, particularly in Melbourne. They have been an integral part of the cat fancy in the region and were one month shy of their 60th anniversary at the time of Diana's passing.
The region will miss you, Diana.
