April is Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM), a month to recognize and celebrate jazz - its roots, future and impact. JAM was created in 2001 by John Edward Hasse, curator of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, a nationally-recognized opportunity to draw public attention to jazz and its extraordinary heritage.
Each year, the museum selects a theme and a featured artist to explore. This year, Jazz Appreciation Month will be exploring the crosspollination of Afro-Caribbean music and jazz leading into the formation of Latin jazz. One of the iconic figures recognized in the Afro-Caribbean music tradition was bassist, bandleader, composer, and co-creator of mambo Israel “Cachao” López. Check out this year’s resources HERE to learn more about the history of Latin Jazz.
