Oral Screening Bill for Elementary Students Awaits Governor’s Signature

Senate Bill 142 (SB 142) was overwhelmingly approved by the legislature in the final days of the 2024 Colorado legislative session. It is waiting for the governor’s signature to become law.

The CDA created this legislation as an initial step in a broader plan to incorporate dental screenings in schools as a “norm” in Colorado — much like they are already for vision, hearing and mental health.

SB 142 would create a pilot program in public schools through awarded grants and provide oral health screenings to kindergarteners and third graders.

With Gov. Polis signing SB24-10 late May 17, Colorado became the eighth state to join the Dentist and Dental Hygienist Compact, SB-24-10.

Action Team Leaders (ATL): Educates legislators and policymakers on key dental issues.
CDA Enterprises Board: Our for-profit division, which endorses companies, products, and services that bring value to our members.
Finance Council: Ensures the financial stability and integrity of the CDA.
Foundation Board: A 501(c)3 that supports the CDA's access to care initiatives.

Government Relations Council: Recommends policies on legislative and regulatory issues. This council is seeking general dentists who accept commercial insurance.
Membership Council: Oversees the CDA's membership recruitment and retention, along with member benefits and wellness.
Third Party Payor Committee: Advocates for the dental profession on insurance-related matters and builds better relationships with insurance companies.
