Letter from President of the Board, Rena Masten Leddy

As we approach the end of another eventful year, I find myself reflecting on the challenges and successes of California downtowns. There have been a lot of changes and obstacles, yet, through it all, your downtown leadership and your spirit of resilience have shined through.

The past year brought challenges from ongoing public health concerns to economic uncertainties. Despite these hurdles, our downtown communities have demonstrated incredible resilience. Downtown organizations pivoted, adapted and found innovative ways to connect with residents, workers, and visitors.  We will continue to thrive because we know that partnership and collaboration with local businesses, property owners, city officials and community members work.

In 2023, the California Downtown Association, in partnership with the International Downtown Association, organized the annual West Coast Urban District Forum (WCUDF) in San Jose. The conference brought our communities together to discuss ideas and learn from each other. Your participation and support have been instrumental in making this conference successful. I hope you will attend WCUDF 2024 in San Diego. Registration is now open for the event being held February 28-March 1, 2024.

At the State capitol, CDA has been a strong advocate for policies that promote downtown development and economic vitality. Our efforts have contributed to positive legislative changes that support the growth of local businesses, improve infrastructure, and enhance the overall downtown experience for residents and visitors alike. We are grateful for the many partnerships and collaborations that have strengthened over the year including the California Restaurant Association, CalChamber, the California Special Districts Association, the League of California Cities, the California State Association of Counties, CalTravel and the California Retailers Association.

As we bid farewell to 2023, this will be my last month as President of the Board. We welcome new Board members:

  • Anthony Rodriguez, LA Fashion District
  • Brian Wallach, Pasadena Playhouse District
  • Savlan Hauser, Jack London District Oakland

Congratulations to our officers for the next two years:

  • President: Austin Metoyer, Downtown Long Beach Alliance
  • 1st Vice President: Chloe Shipp, San Jose Downtown Association
  • 2nd Vice President: Suzanne Holley, Downtown Center BID, LA
  • Secretary: Andrew Robinson, The East Cut, San Francisco
  • Treasurer, John Caner, Downtown Berkeley Association
  • Immediate Past President: Rena Masten Leddy, Urban Place Consulting Group
  • Membership Chair: Kathy Hemmenway, Walnut Creek Downtown
  • Legislative Chair: Liz Lorand Williams, Downtown Sacramento Partnership

The California Downtown Association remains committed to supporting our members, fostering community growth, and advocating for the vibrancy of our downtowns. We want to express our deepest gratitude to all our members, partners, and supporters. Your dedication and enthusiasm have been the driving force behind the successes we've achieved together.

Wishing you a joyful holiday season and a Happy New Year!
