Two new employment laws were recently signed into law that impact nearly every employer in the State. Our panel of experts will provide a practical breakdown of the New Jersey Equal Pay Law (effective July 1, 2018) and the New Jersey Paid Sick Leave Law (effective October 29, 2018). These new employer mandates impose many new and challenging obligations upon New Jersey employers: from providing equal pay (beyond gender) to those who perform "substantially similar work," to job-protected paid leave for all employees (full-time, part-time, temporary and seasonal). These are game-changing laws!

Join us to learn best practices for managing and complying with these new laws in order to avoid significant liability and penalties.

Policy Review: Are You, Your Home, and Your Auto Fully Insured?

By Matt Peroni
Supervisor, Personal Lines Underwriting

Many people only look at their auto or homeowners policy when it's time to renew. Even then, their eyes will drift to the premium price, instead of the protection the policy actually provides.

To ensure your vehicle and home have the level of insurance they require, it's wise to do a comprehensive review of your policies at least once a year. Also, remember to report any changes throughout the year that may impact your insurance policies, so that you are properly protected. Home renovations to your kitchen or bathroom, a finished basement, or a room addition increase the value of your home. Getting married or having a recently permitted/licensed teen driver in the house will likely affect your auto policy.

Home
When reviewing your home policy, here are some questions to keep in mind. Does it give me enough protection if I need to rebuild my home? Does it cover my personal belongings, furniture, and appliances? Do I have enough liability insurance? Are my valuables-such as fine jewelry and luxury watches-appropriately covered?

Check to see if your policy pays losses at "actual cash value," which factors in depreciation, or at "replacement cost," which reimburses you for the amount it costs to actually replace a damaged item.

Also, know whether you have a "named peril" policy, which only covers your property for specific risks listed in your policy, or "all risk", which covers your property for all losses except those that are specifically excluded. A named peril policy is typically less expensive than an all risk policy. However, an all risk policy will cover losses that a named peril policy will not, such as property damage caused when a window is left open during a rainstorm.

Auto
When reviewing your auto policy, there are questions you should consider throughout the year. Should I raise or lower my deductible? Is my liability protection for collision and bodily injury sufficient? Does it include rental car coverage, and for how long and how much per day?

Also, check to see if there any discounts for which you may be eligible, including bundling your auto and home policies with one insurer, which could help lower your premium.

The time you invest in your policy review can save you money, while ensuring that you, your auto, home, and possessions have protection when it counts.

When serving in a business development role or attending a networking event, it is so easy to get distracted with your brain focused on the next comment or mind stuck on your "sales pitch" that you do not truly appreciate the new connection you are making. People typically enjoy talking about themselves and sharing their stories... the more you learn about them the more likely you are to build a relationship that can create opportunities down the road.

NJBPU Reminds New Jersey Residents About Area Code Dialing Changes Taking Effect This Month
Beginning August 18, New Jersey residents living in the 856 and 609 area codes will need to change the way they dial phone numbers on their landlines and cellular devices due to new dialing procedures.  The change was prompted by the increasing number of new telephone lines or services in the 609 area. As a result, any new lines or services may be given phone numbers from the new 640 area code. This action is being taken to ensure a continuing supply of new phone numbers.
