March 19, 2024

It has been an amazing few weeks in Community Consolidated School District 89!

I read to several classes as our schools celebrated “Read Across America”. The students asked lots of thoughtful questions and shared emphatic insights about the curious dinosaurs and persistent turtles in our stories.

Then, I attended the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce awards where Laura Lipinski was honored as CCSD 89 Educator of the Year, a well-deserved recognition for an incredible educator.

Last week, I watched two Spartan teams - girls basketball and boys volleyball - play in conference tournament championship games.

Finally, this past weekend, dozens of Glen Crest students put on an incredible performance of Matilda, the school’s musical. It was wonderful to see so many people in attendance to support these super-talented kids!

The common element to each of these events is the commitment of the staff and community to creating opportunities for the whole child to thrive, whether it’s in academics, social-emotional development, the arts, or athletics. It’s clear that CCSD 89 families love being a part of creating the best possible educational experience for students.

That’s one of the reasons I was so pleased 434 families took the time to fill out our calendar survey. We presented the results at Monday’s Board meeting and we will be using your feedback as we plan for future school calendars.

I feel so honored to be a part of this community where education is a centerpiece of daily life. Thank you for all you do to make CCSD 89 a special place to learn!

Sincerely,

Doug Eccarius

CCSD 89 Superintendent

2023-24 calendar update: Students will be in school on April 29

Last day of 2023-24 school for students will be Friday, May 31

The CCSD 89 Board of Education recently approved two changes to this year’s calendar: April 29 will now be a full day of student attendance and the last day of school for students will be a half-day on Friday, May 31.

The updated calendar can be viewed here: www.ccsd89.org/2324calendar

Monday, April 29, was scheduled to be a School Improvement Day with no students in attendance. Monday, April 29, will now be a regular full day of attendance for all students. (Any students who cannot attend due to previously scheduled events will have an excused absence.)

That change will move the last day of the 2023-24 school year for students to Friday, May 31. May 31 will be a half day for students with morning attendance. Student dismissal on the half-day will be at 11:15 a.m. for Glen Crest Middle School and 11:50 a.m. for elementary schools.

CCSD 89 superintendent Doug Eccarius suggested these changes so more students will be in attendance on the last day of school and to allow the district’s summer construction to begin earlier. Although all schools were able to open on time for the 2023-24 school year, construction continued through the last day of summer break. This year, there are already nine less days available for summer construction. Moving the last day to May 31 preserves as many construction days as possible.

Summer construction is scheduled to begin May 31

Construction projects at Community Consolidated School District 89 buildings are scheduled to begin on the same day school will end for students: Friday, May 31. Access to some buildings will be limited throughout the summer of 2024.

Briar Glen will be closed throughout the summer as crews complete major work on heating, air conditioning, lighting, windows, doors, and ceilings throughout the school. The parking lots at Arbor View and Glen Crest will be replaced; the parking lots at Park View and Westfield will be resealed. You can see a list of scheduled and completed construction here: www.ccsd89.org/24construction

Families are encouraged to stay off of the school’s playground equipment when construction crews are actively working at the school. (At the end of the summer, crews may also be at the buildings on weekends.)
