Craven County Schools Celebrates Gains in

School Performance Results for 2023-2024

New Bern, NC - The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction released the 2023-2024 school performance results on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, to the State Board of Education for all Public School Units (PSU) in the state. These results are used to calculate the school performance letter grades, with 80% percent of the calculation based on proficiency results on the state’s standardized tests and 20% percent based on students' academic growth.

Academic growth indicates the progress that students in the school made over the previous year. The standard is roughly equivalent to a year’s worth of growth for a year of instruction. Growth is reported for each school as 1) Exceeded Growth Expectations, 2) Met Growth Expectations, or 3) Did Not Meet Growth Expectations as measured by EVAAS, a statistical tool North Carolina uses to measure student growth when common assessments are administered.

The indicators for elementary and middle schools differ for high school, as presented in the chart and explanation below:

The total school performance score is converted to a 100-point scale and then used to determine a school performance grade of A, B, C, D, or F. The final grade is based on a 15-point scale: A: 85-100 B: 70-84 C: 55-69 D: 40-54 F: Less than 40.

Based on the 2023-2024 Accountability Results, Craven County Schools celebrates the following accomplishments:

  • The overall district grade-level proficiency (GLP) for all grades and tested subjects is 53.9%, slightly up from 53.6% for the 2022-20223 school year.
  • 16 of 26 schools Met or Exceeded Expected Growth
  • 19 of our 26 schools (73%) earned a letter grade of C or better, which is equivalent to last year.
  • Three of our 26 schools moved up a letter grade.
  • Our English Learner Proficiency showed progress, increasing from 18.5 % during the 2022-2023 school year to 20.9 % for the 2023-2024 school year.
  • Our percentage of students scoring 19 or above on the ACT increased from 35.4% to 36.1%.

The district grade level proficiency (GLP) for Reading, Mathematics, and Science in Grades 3-8 increased.

  • Reading is 55.2 % (up from 54.6% in 2022-2023).
  • Math is 53.5% (up from 52.0% in 2022-2023).
  • Science is 71.0% (up from 69.2% in 2022-2023).

Dr. Miller, Superintendent, shares, “As a district, while we acknowledge we still have work to do, we celebrate the gains we have made this past year as they are a true testament to the hard work and dedication of our educators and students. We are committed to focusing on the areas that need improvement, as our ultimate goal is to see each and every student succeed. I am proud of our schools that have beaten the odds and overcome the myths that they cannot be successful. When we become complacent, we are doing a disservice to our children, so seeing the fire and passion in our staff is exciting, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for ALL our students.”

The North Carolina School Report Cards based on the 2023-2024 results will be officially released in October 2024. For more information, please visit the North Carolina Department of Instruction website.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF SECURITY AND EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT, Mr. Nick Lucas

As we start the new school year, Craven County Schools wants to re-emphasize the importance we place on safety, emergency preparedness, and security as a daily facet in our efforts to create a safe and productive learning environment.

Below is a 2-page informational sheet explaining the responses used under the Standard Response Protocol, the same system used here since 2020. Please be informed of the emergency protocols and preparedness taught to your child and to all staff, and feel free to reach out with any concerns or questions.

Dear Craven County Schools Family,

We are quickly approaching the September 24th deadline for all students in K-12 (traditional students).  If those students have not met the requirements for immunizations and/or Health Assessments, they cannot return to school on Wednesday, September 25, 2024. Having an appt. for a date after 9-24-24 does not prevent exclusion from school.

Below are the NC General Statutes that are required:

Immunization Law:

§ 130A-155. Submission of certificate to child care facility, preschool and school authorities; record maintenance; reporting.

Medical Exemption: § 130A-156. Medical exemption.

MEDICAL EXEMPTIONS FROM IMMUNIZATION: 10A NCAC 41A .0404

Religious Exemption: § 130A-157. Religious exemption.

NON-RELIGIOUS PERSONAL BELIEF NO EXEMPTION: 10A NCAC 41A .0403

Health Assessment Requirement (GS 130a-440):

https://www.ncleg.gov/EnactedLegislation/Statutes/PDF/BySection/Chapter_130a/GS_130a-440.pdf

· Medical exemptions require a form completed by the physician licensed to practice in NC.

· Religious exemptions can be a statement such as "It is against my religious beliefs to vaccinate my child,  (DOB x-x-xxxx)" and signed by the parent/guardian which includes a date. The statement cannot say "It is against my personal beliefs..."

More information on North Carolina’s requirements for vaccines can be found on the NCDHHS websiteFor any questions about this please contact your child’s school nurse.

Thank you,

Luanne Mack, BSN, RN, NCSN

Today, representatives from Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative presented $1,000 to Havelock High School for the Angel Fund. This fund will help students who do not have money to pay for their meals, allowing them to have a healthy, delicious meal. We appreciate the support and kindness of our generous community partner! The donated funds were generated last month during "The Sign Wars" in Carteret County.
