What’s contributing to the physician shortage in Southwest Florida?: “(...) A physician shortage that began pre-COVID-19 has only gotten worse post-pandemic, said Dr. Zubin Pachori, co-founder and managing partner of Premier Inpatient Partners and vice president of Collier County Medical Society, who calls it “a silent epidemic that’s not talked about enough.” - Gulfshore Business

New rule will let some Florida patients, visitors, employees opt out of mask wearing: “As part of what Gov. Ron DeSantis has heralded as Florida's post-COVID era of "medical freedom," one of his health agencies is proposing a new rule that would allow some patients, visitors and health care workers to opt out of wearing masks.” - Tallahassee Democrat

Florida Supreme Court upholds state’s 15-week abortion ban, but voters will soon have a say: “The Florida Supreme Court on Monday (4/1) cleared the way for the state to ban abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, before many women know they are pregnant, while also giving voters a chance to remove restrictions in November.” - AP

Change in Poverty Qualifications and Sovereign Immunity

Neighborhood Health Clinic

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has approved an update in federal poverty guidelines from 200% to 300%, due to the rising cost of living. Increasing the percentage will create more opportunities for people in that lower economic threshold to receive necessary care.

Sovereign Immunity in Florida, which provides liability protection for medical professionals who give back by volunteering their time to help those in need, previously took effect within the 200% federal poverty guidelines. On March 21st, a new law in Florida amends the Sovereign Immunity statutes to include those whose family income does not exceed 300% of the federal poverty level.

15th Annual Women’s Health Forum a Resounding Success

As part of its ongoing efforts to be a health resource for residents and visitors in Collier County, CCMS and the Foundation of CCMS were pleased to host the 15th Annual Women’s Health Forum, a free health education event for the public, on Sat., Mar. 23rd at the Naples United Church of Christ.

The Forum, with the theme “Fit & Fabulous You: Today & Beyond” focused on helping attendees develop a deeper understanding of their health and what it takes to become more “fit & fabulous”.

Each year the Forum also enables CCMS to donate funds to its charitable Foundation, to help provide scholarships for future medical professionals and support for local healthcare programs in need. Attendee donations at the door totaled $1,550, and CCMS is donating $5,000 of the sponsor and exhibitor fees.

The 15th Annual Women’s Health Forum was made possible with the generosity of presenting sponsors Hobdari Family Health, Inspire Exercise Medicine/Magnolia Breast Center, and Wintrust Wealth Management. Numerous sponsor and exhibitors were also critical to the event’s success.
