Dear Colleagues,

Congratulations to two outstanding teachers – Joseph Alvarico from Mt. Diablo Unified School District and Annalouisa Gonzalez-Ortega from Liberty Union High School who were selected the Teachers of the Year for Contra Costa County. They go on to represent our county in the state competition. Though only two teachers were selected, they represent the good work and commitment to the education of students happening throughout Contra Costa County.

This month, we observe the end of Hispanic Heritage Month, the start of Filipino American Heritage Month and LGBTGIA+ History Month, as well as Indigenous People’s Day on Oct. 9. These observances and others throughout the year remind us that education is an important tool for promoting, understanding, tolerance and unity that creates a safe and inclusive community for all.

On Friday, Oct. 6, we are hosting a Brown Bag seminar with Contra Costa College’s Agustín Palacios for an engaging conversation about Hispanic Heritage Month. There is more information in the newsletter, including the Zoom link, so I hope you can join us.

I cannot end this letter without first recognizing School Administrators Week, Oct. 8-14. I want to thank all the educational leadership, staff and teachers at schools and school districts in Contra Costa County for the incredible work you do for the nearly 170,000 students in the county.

As always, please take a look at the workshops and professional development opportunities listed below. We are proud to be able to offer a variety of opportunities that could benefit educators throughout the county.

With gratitude,

Lynn Mackey

Contra Costa County Superintendent of Schools
