"Somebody had to do it first": Celebrating trailblazer Shirley Chisholm

Don't miss your chance to get the limited edition Shirley Chisholm stamp from the US Postal Service! Chisholm shattered barriers when shShirley Chisholm: Black Heritage Stamp Seriese became the first black woman ever elected to Congress in 1968, and she would go on to run a historic campaign for the Presidency in 1972. In her words: "The next time a woman runs, or a black, or a Jew or anyone from a group that the country is 'not ready' to elect to its highest office, I believe that he or she will be taken seriously from the start...I ran because somebody had to do it first."

Speaking of trailblazing women...

If you are in the DC area, mark your calendars now!  The National Archives, in partnership with the U.S. Association of Former Members of Congress, presents  Women in Congressional Leadership on Thursday, March 13, 2014 at 7:00 pm. This free panel discussion will be moderated by Jackie Calmes from the New York Times. The distinguished panel features: Senators Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) and Carol Moseley Braun (D-IL); and former members Mary Bono (R-CA), Connie Morella (R-MD) and Barbara Kennelly (D-CT). More details and RSVP information can be found here.

Wanted: The next generation of trailblazers!

CAWP is loo New NEWL logo king for aspiring women leaders to attend NEW Leadership™ New Jersey! NEW Leadership™ is a nonpartisan program developed by CAWP to address the under-representation of women in American politics. The six-day residential summer institute educates college women about the importance of political engagement and encourages them to become effective leaders in the political arena. We are currently accepting applications for NEW Leadership™ New Jersey, which will be held June 5-10, 2014 at the Eagleton Institute of Politics on the Rutgers - New Brunswick campus. More information and an online application are available here.

Feeling inspired? Blaze your own trail.

Ready to Run Campaign Training for Women There's still time to register for CAWP's Ready to Run™ campaign training, set for March 21-22 on the New Brunswick campus. The latest addition to an already stellar lineup of political experts: Congresswoman Grace Meng will keynote the Diversity Initiative program on the 21st. Learn more about Ready to Run™  here.

Making history: Just as Shirley Chisholm said, someone has to do it first. Last week Janet Yellen became the first woman chair of the Federal Reserve in its 100-year history.

More words of wisdom from a smart woman: During her 1967 race for  Congress, the late Shirley Temple Black said: "I think men are fine and here to stay but I have a hunch that it wouldn't hurt to have a woman's viewpoint expressed in that delegation of 38 men. One congresswoman among 38 congressmen is not unfair, fellows."  We couldn't agree more. RIP, Ambassador Black.
