CASN is pleased to announce that Dr. Martin Charette from Sherbrooke University and Dr. Ahtisham Younis from Memorial University are the recipients of the 2024 Pat Griffin Research Grant.

We are also pleased to announce that Amrita Sondhi-Cooke from McMaster University is the recipient of the Woodend Clinical Education Research Grant.

Nursing Students’ Views on an E-Learning Activity on Clinical Leadership and Ageism: A Cross-Sectional Study (en anglais seulement)

Students require knowledge and skills in clinical leadership in order to address the issue of ageism. An e-learning module was developed that used ageism as an exemplar to practise using the skills and knowledge needed for clinical leadership. Ageism was chosen because it is prevalent in nursing culture and nursing education and influences nursing practice with older people.

L’annonce de mauvaises nouvelles est une activité courante dans la pratique de plusieurs professionnels de la santé. Même si peu d’activités de formation leur sont offertes afin de développer leurs compétences communicationnelles à ce sujet, la simulation reste une alternative privilégiée. Le but de cette revue rapide était de décrire les caractéristiques d’activités de simulation offertes aux professionnels de la santé pour apprendre l’annonce de mauvaises nouvelles.

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière (QANE-AFI) has now been published for 10 years. We asked two active researchers in nursing and nursing education, Christine Ou and Patrick Lavoie, to share their perspectives on the contribution of this journal, the needed research and scholarly work to advance quality nursing education, and any other insights they may want to share.

La revue Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière (QANE-AFI) est maintenant publiée depuis 10 ans. Nous avons demandé à deux chercheurs actifs en sciences infirmières et en formation en sciences infirmières, Christine Ou et Patrick Lavoie, de partager leurs perceptions de la contribution de la revue, leur avis sur la recherche et des travaux de scholarship requis pour continuer à faire progresser la qualité de la formation infirmière et toute autre réflexion dont ils aimeraient nous faire part.

Simulation Certificate Program - Module 4: Evaluation and Scholarship

Starts September 24 and 26, 2024 ONLINE

We are looking for study participants for a study about interventions that may help improve patients’ physical and cognitive functioning after a hospital stay.

You will be asked to complete an online survey lasting approximately 15-20 minutes and have the option of participating in a remote follow-up focus group.

You may be eligible if you:

1.    Are a clinician (e.g., nurse, social worker) or decision-maker (e.g., manager, director)

2.    Provide or administrate healthcare services to older medical patients before or after hospital discharge

3.    Reside in Ontario, Nova Scotia, or Alberta

The study has received ethics approval at York University, Dalhousie University, and the University of Alberta.

Examining Faculty and Administrator Perceptions of Primary Care Nursing Education within Canadian Baccalaureate Nursing Programs: A Qualitative Descriptive Study

Nurse Educators from across Canada are invited to participate in a research study about primary care nursing education within baccalaureate nursing programs.

This study is part of a doctoral research study led by Deanne Curnew, in the Faculty of Nursing at Memorial University. It is focused on examining how undergraduate nursing education contributes to primary care nursing career development. In particular, this qualitative study will examine how Canadian nursing faculty and administrators perceive primary care education is included in their programs.

You are eligible to participate if you fit the following criteria:

·  In a teaching or administrative role within a CASN-accredited baccalaureate entry-to-practice program

·   Employed in a full-time or part-time permanent or contract position at a CASN-accredited school/faculty of nursing

·  Have knowledge of primary care and/or community health content within your baccalaureate nursing program

Participation involves an interview of approximately 60-minutes, by phone or video-conferencing (Webex), at a time that is convenient for you. If you are interested in being interviewed for this study or would like further information, please contact the study lead: Deanne Curnew by email (dcurnew@mun.ca).

This study has received ethics approval through Memorial University (File No: 2024.059). 

Examen des perceptions des professeurs et des administrateurs sur la formation en soins infirmiers de première ligne dans les programmes canadiens de baccalauréat en sciences infirmières : une étude descriptive qualitative

Les infirmières enseignantes de partout au Canada sont invitées à participer à une étude de recherche sur la formation en soins infirmiers en soins primaires dans le cadre des programmes de baccalauréat en sciences infirmières.

Cette étude fait partie d'une étude doctorale dirigée par Deanne Curnew, de la Faculté des sciences infirmières de Memorial University. Il se concentre sur l’examen de la manière dont la formation infirmière de premier cycle contribue au développement de carrière en soins infirmiers primaires. En particulier, cette étude qualitative examinera la manière dont les professeurs et administrateurs de sciences infirmières du Canada perçoivent l'enseignement des soins primaires comme étant inclus dans leurs programmes.

Vous êtes éligible pour participer si vous répondez aux critères suivants :

·   Dans un rôle d'enseignant ou d'administrateur au sein d'un programme d'entrée à la pratique du baccalauréat accrédité par l'ACESI.

·   Employé dans un poste permanent ou contractuel à temps plein ou à temps partiel dans une école/faculté de sciences infirmières accréditée par l'ACESI.

·   Avoir une connaissance du contenu des soins primaires et/ou de la santé communautaire dans le cadre de votre programme de baccalauréat en sciences infirmières.

Anything but a ‘standard’ conversation, we hope these interviews will inspire, provoke and transform the way you think about nursing and healthcare. Stay tuned for Dr. Duchscher’s interviews of leaders discussing ‘The State of Nursing in Canada’ with subjects related to nursing education, internationally educated nurses, and the challenges of practicing in the paradox that is contemporary nursing.
