Press Release:

CASETA Annual Symposium & Texas Art Fair

set for June in Houston

(San Angelo, TX) – The Center for the Advancement and Study of Early Texas Art (CASETA) is pleased to announce that its Annual Symposium & Texas Art Fair is set to take place in Houston from Friday, June 21 through Sunday, June 23, 2024, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Houston- Greenway Plaza. Registration for the event is now open at www.caseta.org.

“We are looking forward to an exciting weekend celebrating Texas art and artists this summer in Houston,” said Bonnie Campbell, 2024 CASETA symposium chair. “It is going to be extra special with the release of our groundbreaking book, Making the Unknown Known, that covers 100 years of women in Texas art.

A key component of this year’s symposium programming is the recent publication of Making the Unknown Known: Women in Early Texas Art, 1860s-1960s, published by Texas A&M University Press. In addition to a special celebration with a book signing to kickstart the weekend, other presentations throughout the weekend will offer in-depth looks at some of the featured artists.

Additional Houston-focused presentations include This is Contemporary Art: The Present Moment in Houston 1948-84 by Alison de Lima Greene of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and The Art of John Biggers: A Living Legacy by Alvia J. Wardlaw, Ph.D. of Texas Southern University.

Special programs during the symposium include private tours of Early Texas Art from the John L. Nau III Collection of Texas Art, the Menil Drawing Institute, and Foltz Fine Art.

The Texas Art Fair, held in conjunction with the symposium, is the largest gathering in the state of galleries and auction houses featuring Early Texas Art. Free to the public, the fair will be open on Saturday, June 22, from 9 AM until 6 PM, and on Sunday, June 23, from 9:30 AM until 1:00 PM.

Tickets for the symposium are $150 for current CASETA members. To become a member or register for the event, visit www.caseta.org. Sponsorship opportunities and a complete list of activities are also available at that link.

I am proud of the work I have done at the MoBB, the staff and volunteers that I have had the pleasure of working with, the support of Sul Ross State University and the Texas State University System and all of the wonderful donors from members to foundations who recognize the good of this museum. — Mary Bones

Mary Bones retires as Director of Museum of the Big Bend

Mary Bones began working with the Museum of the Big Bend 24 years ago as the Curator of Collections. One of her first assignments was the return of o6 Cowboy baseball memorabilia that was on loan to the museum from the Lacy Family. The hunt for those items gave her the opportunity to go through the entire museum collection and enabled her to have a thorough understanding of what the museum possessed.

One of the projects she is most proud of is The Lost Colony: Texas Regionalist Paintings exhibit and catalog featuring the artists who taught at Sul Ross during the long semesters and those who came to lead the summer Art Colony, 1921-1950. In 2017 Mary became the Interim Director of the museum, and Museum Director a year later. A capital campaign was launched to build a second museum building and the new Emmett and Miriam McCoy Building was dedicated in June 2023—a huge accomplishment!

The Permian Basin Area Foundation is celebrating Mary’s remarkable legacy through the Mary Bones Endowment for the Museum of the Big Bend, established in her honor. To donate click the link:
