2021 Bodegas Ilurce "Rio Madre" Graciano

Rioja, Spain

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bodegas Ilurce is located in Alfaro, the historical capital of southern Rioja. The winery is owned by the Escudero family who until 2010 sold most of their fruit to larger producers. With the help of famed importer Jorge Ordóñez, the family now makes the wine we bring you today.
Their “Rio Madre” is a unique Rioja crafted entirely from Graciano. The grapes, growing at 2,000 feet, are picked by hand and the wine is raised in neutral vessels, resulting in a pure expression of this obscure grape.
Savory, with gobs of dark berry and plum fruit, the 2021 Rio Madre gives way more layers of flavor than you’d expect to find for ten bucks. Nuances of soy, olive, pepper and dried flowers reveal themselves in this unreal value, along with a soft-yet-mouthfilling character.
This is one of the most distinctive and complete $10 wines we’ve had in a LONG time. Awarding 90 Points, Vinous writes:
"The 2021 Graciano Rio Madre, sourced from Alfaro in Rioja Oriental, aged for six months in used French oak barrels. This ripe, black-fruited wine features bay leaf and balsamic notes, complemented by plum marmelade. Dry and juicy, the abundant and taut palate lingers with a lifted flavor, thanks to its heightened acidity. This is a pleasing and sun-kissed expression of Graciano. Drinking Window: 2024 - 2031."
Vinous quotes $14, which is extremely fair for this level of quality. We bring it to you today for a full four bucks less. And, when you buy a case of twelve, we'll give you a bonus $10 Vin Chicago gift card!
2020 Bodegas Vatan "Vatan" Tinta de Toro
Toro, Spain
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Along the Duero river, west of Rioja and Ribera del Duero, the region of Toro lives in relative obscurity. The powerful, dark expressions of Tempranillo produced here are known locally as Tinta de Toro. It is in this region that Jorge Ordoñez makes Vatan from a small parcel of 124-year-old bush vines in the Finca Los Quemaos vineyard.

Vatan is a wine of impact and grace, giving a powerful mouth feel, loads of fruit and earth flavors, and the balance, elegance and refinement that only old vine material can provide. Long, sexy, complex and sophisticated, it’s a glorious bottling that will blow away lovers of both new and old world wines alike. We’re a very solid 93+ Points, verging on 94. Here is the 94-Point review from Vinous:

“The 2020 Vatan comes from exceptionally old vines in the Quemaos vineyard situated in the Villaester de Abajo area. Aged for 20 months in French oak barrels, it displays a dark purple color. The balsamic nose reveals plums, sour cherries and subtle blackberries over a cedar layer. Rich, creamy and juicy on the palate, the supple tannins and mild intensity lead to a nuanced, enduring finish. This is a vibrant interpretation of a successful year for Toro. Drinking Window: 2025 - 2040.”
