It's great to see so many faces back on campus! We are so excited about the upcoming year, and we have many new things in store for you. We have new classes, new programs, new staff, and new ideas to make this an amazing year!

We'd like to welcome Bri Jackson, 2014 CASC alum, and new CASC program assistant! Among her many other talents, Bri will be handing all newsletter announcements. If you would like to include anything in upcoming newsletters, or have comments or suggestions please send them to Bri by Friday at 2 pm.

Social Justice Forum on Ferguson

CASC and the Community Organizing Learning Community in the School of Social Work are hosting an open dialogue on Ferguson. The Forum is open to students, faculty and staff. RSVP.

Welcome Back Ice Cream Social
Mark your calendars for our welcome back ice cream social in the School of Social Work courtyard. Enjoy a mid-afternoon break talking community action and social change, reconnecting with friends in the CASC community, finding out more about new CASC programming and classes, and soaking up the last days of summer!

Register for So Cool, So Just Student Org Fair 

CASC is hosting the third annual social justice student org fair! Be a part of the amazing student orgs on campus dedicated to social change. Interested in registering your group to participate in the fair? Register your group to participate in So Cool, So Just no later than Friday, September 5 at 5 pm.

 

MSW Info Sessions 

CASC is hosting a number of info sessions for students considering applying to the University of Michigan School of Social Work through the Preferred Admissions program. Please see a full calendar of MSW-related events here.

 

Senior Audits

CASC has moved to an online auditing system. You should complete your major degree audit before you complete your minor degree audit. All senior audits should be completed online by following this link or by going to My SSW on the School of Social Work website. Please send any questions about this process to cascminor@umich.edu.

Additional CASC Courses
Special Studies: DECLARE Retreat 
CASC is launching a new retreat called "Declare: Develop Explore Challenge Learn Act Reflect Empower." The retreat will focus on critical social identity reflection, community engagement, and self-development. Students are able to enroll in this course as a 1-credit special studies course that will count towards Diversity. Students can also participate in the retreat without taking it for credit. RCSSCI 461/SOC 489: Organizing: People, Power and Social Change

This course introduces you to the theory and practice of organizing for social justice. Topics

covered include: the nature of organizing; the role of the organizer; motivating collective action through appeals to narratives, values and interests; resources and power; leadership development; building community capacity; strategy and tactics; campaigns; organizational structure and governance. Course readings  provide theoretical, historical, and practical frameworks for developing knowledge and skills in these domains, drawing on scholarship in history, political science, sociology, organizational studies, and social, developmental and cognitive psychology. The Twink Frey Visiting Social Activist Program 

Looking to take your activism idea to the next level? VSA can work with you to create a product that will advance your activism as well as potentially benefiting other activists. The fellowship includes a $10,000 stipend, housing for four weeks, and opportunities to interact with faculty & students at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. For details on the fellowship and information on applying or nominating an individual, click here.

 

Participate in Supporting Literacy Development with the Ginsberg Center

Student volunteers are needed to run book clubs, help out at schools, and serve as literacy mentors. There are also openings for student site leaders on the literacy leadership team. Volunteers can sign-up for weekly and one-time opportunities in Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, and Detroit. For more information, attend an info session.

Starting a Nonprofit 

NEW (Nonprofit Enterprise at Work) is hosting a 3-hour in-depth workshop that will cover topics including nonprofit structure, restrictions, suggested preparation, funding, and paperwork. The workshop will culminate with guest speaker Noam Kimelman, founder of the Detroit Food Academy. To register, click here. If you have any questions, contact Kidada.

Dawn Farm Education Series

Dawn Farm Education Series is a free annual series providing helpful, hopeful, practical information about chemical dependency, recovery, family concerns, and related issues. The Education Series is designed to reduce the misinformation, secrecy, shame and stigma that prevent people with addictions and their families from getting help and getting well, and to help create a community culture that supports recovery. Scholarships and Funding Opportunities

Funding for Student Organizations

CASC students are involved in many activities around campus and we receive multiple requests for funding. CASC has a limited pool of money that CASC students are eligible to apply for. In order to apply for a CASC grant, you must be part of a registered student org and have an SOAS account. There are four funding deadlines throughout the year- October 1, December 1, January 15, and March 15. To apply for funding, students must submit a funding proposal that includes the following information: student org name, contact info, SOAS account number, event name, summary of event, date of event, complete budget. Email questions to cascminor@umich.edu.

 

Fulbright Program

The Fulbright Program for US students offers students and recent alumni the opportunity to work and conduct research in over 140 countries. There are academic, arts, and teaching assistantship grants available. Learn more and apply here
